SIZZLIN SUMMER SPOTS: MORETENSEN'S ICE CREAM

One of my favorite breakfast spots in Connecticut has reinvented itself. After years of serving all three meals, Moretensen's in Newington is now going back to what's it's done well for decades: serving just ice cream. (Check out Eat Up New England's archives from this past January for more on the restaurant's closing.)

Mortensen's Ice Cream now shares a building with Moe's. I visited for the first time over the weekend and was happy to see that their new ice cream parlor still has many of the same flavor of the old restaurant. Milk bottles line the ceiling, along with some new tables. I'm also encouraged by the pie display that's still in their store. It's empty now, but I'm hoping it will be filled with Mort's very popular pies by the holidays.

If you've never had Mortensen's ice cream, check it out this summer. The portions are large and there are countless flavors. I sampled a blueberry crumble flavor which was very good, but wound up ordering some of their good ole fashioned chocolate chip ice cream in a cone.
