A new apartment complex called The Buckley went up in Framingham in the middle of the pandemic. Lucky for everyone who lives there, there's also The Buckley Kitchen & Bar, which is the sister restaurant to Mazi in Ashland. This cozy American bar offers modern takes on American classics, with a splash of Greek inspiration.
There is something for whatever you're in the mood for on the menu. Go for one of their pastas like the swordfish piccata with spaghetti or the classic chicken and Broccoli alfredo. There are also a number of flatbreads including a truffled mushroom and the gyro which is topped with rotisserie pork and tzatziki sauce. Sandwiches include a chicken bacon ranch on Texas toast and a hot & sweet chicken sandwich on Texas Toast.
We started or meal with their truffled fries, which were fantastic. There were plenty for our group of six to share. They also have nachos, BBQ meatballs, fried pickle spears, quesadillas and sticky wings. Their bar also has beer from nearby Jack's Abby on tap, along with cocktails and wine. For dinner, I enjoyed one of their "favorites," the beef barbacoa tacos, with tender and flavorful meat topped with guac and tomato. There are also vegan tacos, salads and a veggie bowl, along with a children's menu.
The Buckley Kitchen and Bar also offers Sunday brunch.

GENEROUS PORTIONS OF COMFORT FOOD AT LUCKY DOG TAVERN IN NORTH SMITHFIELD, RI

Lucky Dog Tavern
North Smithfield, RI
It's always a good sign to arrive at a restaurant you've never tried before and get a rave review from a long-time customer. As we were waiting for our table, one of Lucky Dog Tavern's loyal customers had just eaten and told us that it's one of her favorite spots and all of the food is fantastic. She was right.
Lucky Dog Tavern is nestled on the bottom floor of a two-story home in North Smithfield. It is small, but the food is mighty good. My wife and I enjoyed the perfect meal from start to finish. Our waitress, Raelynn, was as good as it gets. She was highly knowledgeable of everything on the menu, went out of her way to check in on us and make recommendations. When I wasn't sure which beer I wanted to try, she brought over a sample.
The menu is full of comfort food favorites including apps like stuffed mushrooms, Tavern poutine, lobster poutine and calamari. Warm up with some French onion soup or lobster bisque.
Entrees include flappers aka wings, quesadillas, burgers, pastas, sandwiches, chicken, veal, and seafood dishes. Lucky Dog also serves up steak tips, a sirloin strip and plenty of hearty daily specials. I ordered one of their gourmet grilled cheeses, the beef short rib and cheddar grilled cheese, which was fantastic. My wife enjoyed the large plate of eggplant parm, and there was plenty to bring home.
Since the meal was so good, we had to order dessert. We loved the molten chocolate lava cake, which comes with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. You would never know it's gluten free. There's also a house-made bread pudding for dessert that looks amazing.
Lucky Dog Tavern is one of the best restaurants I've been to in a long time, but make a reservation because it gets busy especially on weekends.

BOTTOMS UP AT THE ROCK BOTTOM

Rock Boston Restaurant & Brewery
Boston, MA
No one saw it coming, but last Saturday families flooded the Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery on Stuart Street. We were all in the city for the Cocomelon show at the Boch Center. After the show ended, it was a mad rush for food. The unsuspecting staff at Rock Bottom did a great job seating all of the parents and kids.
All of the moms and dads, including me, got ordered a beer. I enjoyed a Guinness. Rock Bottom offers many local beers, along with boozy milkshakes, cocktails, margaritas, mules and wine.
For lunch, I LOVED their chicken carbonara. The linguini is covered in a garlic-parmesan cream and is topped with a sunny-side up egg. Other entrees include fish and chips, Cajun fish tacos, grilled salmon and steak & fries. There are several burgers on their menu, along with a fried chicken sandwich, and a Philly cheesesteak. Rock Bottom also serves up a bunch of salads, bowls and flatbreads. For dessert, their beer donut holes covered in caramel sound amazing.

BARRETT'S WATERFRONT IN FALL RIVER, MA

Barrett's Waterfront
Fall River, Massachusetts
www.barrettswaterfront.com
Barrett's Alehouse are expanding in Massachusetts, with one of their finest locations in Fall River called Barrett's Waterfront. This place is HUGE with plenty of seating inside and out. Eat Up New England recommends eating al fresco for a view of the water.
Barrett's Waterfront offers many beers and cocktails, with many seasonal selections. There are a bunch of fall beers on tap right now like Pumking, Pumpkinhead, Sam Adams Octoberfest and Pumlin Shandy. I highly recommend their Drunkin Pumpkin Iced Latte, a mix of iced coffee and vodka with a sweet cinnamon rim.
Appetizers are large. Just look at the huge plate of chili nachos were ordered. There's enough for 3-4 people. There are other traditional apps like buffalo chicken dip, shrimp and calamari. Many of the dishes at Barrett's Waterfront are inspired by the local culture, so there are plenty of seafood options and Portuguese dishes you won't see at their other locations. There's their Portuguese Stuffie, a quahog shell stuffed with Portuguese style dressing, and entrees like Portuguese steak and a Portuguese burger. They also have Seafood on Ice with raw jumbo shrimp, littlenecks and oysters to choose from.
If you visit for lunch, try one of their lunch specials. They are still a good size. I enjoyed the cod with fries and seasonal squash. One of their most popular dishes is their chicken & waffle sliders, with belgian waffles for buns, maple glazed chicken and cranberry spread. Barrett's also serves mac n cheese, steak tips, seafood casserole, roast turkey dinner, along with a bunch of burgers, bowls, flatbreads, salads and wraps.

CRAFT BEERS & LOCAL FOODS AT VERMONT'S KINGDOM TAPROOM
Tuesday, May 01, 2018
A stout with a sample of a vanilla porter.
Artichoke dip & chips
BBQ beef brisket with herb-roasted potatoes
Kingdom Taproom serves craft beer and locally sourced foods.
St. Johnsbury, VT
www.kingdomtaproom.com
Kingdom Taproom brings some of New England's best craft beers and locally-sourced food together. This gastropub is located in northeastern Vermont and is well worth a stop on the way to Canada.
At lunch, we were handed a beer menu which included an impressive selection of beers, many of them from Vermont and other New England states. I settled with a stout and was delighted when our server also presented me with a sample of a vanilla porter that they had on tap. Now, that's service. BTW, Kingdom Taproom always has a current list of their beers on their website.
The food is as tasty as their beer. We began with their cheesy artichoke dip and chips. I really enjoyed their BBQ beef brisket sandwich. I ordered it with herb-roasted potatoes, which were a tasty twist on regular fries. Also on their menu: several salads, flatbreads, mac & cheese and California BLT. For dessert, there's a root beer float but they also serve a Dark Beer Float with beer and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

FALL IS IN FULL SWING AT PADDY'S PUB!

Apple Cider Sangria
West Newton, MA
www.paddys.us
If you're looking for some spiked hot cider, pumpkin beer and some hearty fall flavors, Paddy's Pub in West Newton, Massachusetts is calling your name. This Eat Up New England Favorite has just been renovated and is serving all of the tastes that make autumn such a great season.
Let's start out at the bar. Every fall, I order their apple cider sangria. It's a big ole glass with a cinnamon stick for that perfect fall flavor. Other fall libations include a pumpkin spice martini, autumn mule and Elesha's Hot Mulled Cider, which is spiked with Applejack brandy or Captain Morgan spiced rum. Paddy's also has an extensive beer menu with plenty of pumpkin brews and Oktoberfests for all.
Prepare for hibernation with one of their special entrees including pumpkin ravioli, maple & mustard ravioli or Catherine's Flatbread, which is topped with butternut squash, Craisons and ricotta & mozzarella cheeses. I enjoyed their Pasquale's Pasta, with fresh fusilli, crumbled Italian sausage and kale. If that doesn't fill you up, nothing will!

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!
Friday, March 17, 2017
Eat Up New England enjoyed dinner at a favorite Irish pub, Paddy's Pub in Newton, Massachusetts. The place was packed, but we scored a comfortable table within about 20 minutes. Paddy's offered a special menu for St. Patrick's Day, with favorites like corned beef & cabbage, shepard's pie and chicken pot pie. Since it's lent, your Catholic webmaster enjoyed the baked haddock with Brussels's sprouts and fries. My wife and I also shared their warm pretzel bites. Of course, I washed it all down with a pint of Guinness. I hope your St. Patrick's Day wasn't Guinn-less, as well!

BEER BREWED IN HOUSE AND EXCELLENT BAR FOOD AT TRINITY BREWHOUSE IN PROVIDENCE
Saturday, February 04, 2017
The beers on top change every night, but last night I was excited to try their Black Hops. This double black IPA is an interesting concoction that looks like a stout. It's also 8.8% alcohol and is just $6 a pint. Other beers include a Russian Imperial Stout called Darkness and their signature Kolsch beer, with a pale golden color and light body. Trinity also sells big old growlers of beer to take home.
Trinity offers a traditional bar food menu to go along with their beers. Start off with Trinity nachos, chips & salsa, chili or chicken wings. For dinner, I would highly recommend one of their burgers. Choose from 6 or 10 ounce and top it with whatever you want. I enjoyed a 10 ounce with Vermont cheddar cheese, bacon and stout caramelized onions. It was perfectly cooked and served with a pile of their homemade fries. Other entrees include a New England clam roast, steak tips, fish & chips, lobster mac & cheese, pulled pork BBQ, jerk chicken and 12-inch rustic pizzas. Trinity even has a vegan ravioli for our vegan/vegetarian friends.
Trinity Brewhouse was an excellent dining experience from start to finish. Check them out online and social media for a look at what beers they have on tap before you visit.

THE BOATHOUSE IN HARVARD SQUARE
Thursday, August 18, 2016
The Boathouse in Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts is just steps away from the Charles River, making it the perfect place to grab dinner and drink. The Boathouse prides itself as a pub and grille, mixing a long list of beers, rums and cocktails with a tavern-style menu.
I tried one of my favorite new American pale ales, Harpoon Camp Wannamango, at the Boathouse for the first time. What a perfect summer beer. It goes down like water!
We started off our meal with their calamari with marinara sauce. It was crisp and there was plenty to share with our table of five. Other apps include Parmesan truffle fries, mussels, fish tacos and popcorn chicken. I ordered their chicken sandwich for dinner. It's a panko crusted chicken breast drizzled with ranch dressing and served with fries. It was so good. They also have burgers, a steak sandwich, a veggie burger, and a hot Italian sausage sandwich. Other entrees include steak tips, mac & cheese and Shepard's pie.
The Boathouse's bar is open until 1 am every night. They also serve brunch on the weekend.

AMAZING MAC & CHEESE AT BOSTON'S PARISH CAFE
Wednesday, November 11, 2015
It's been rainy and cold this week. When the weather gets bad, Eat Up New England goes for some comfort food to warm up. Today, my friend Gail introduced me to the Parish Cafe in Boston's South End.
Parish has a long list of beers on tap. We tried to order a Shipyard Pumpkinhead, but they've already moved on to Shipyard GingerBreadHead, a Christmas season beer that's packed with a tasty gingerbread cookie flavor. It's my new favorite!
Apps include an egg quesadilla, hummus platter and a meatball. Gail steered us to their "Bowl-O-Rings," deep-fried onion rings with their homemade chipotle aioli sauce. We ordered the half portion and it was plenty for two. The chipotle aioli sauce is killer and makes these an app worth order again and again.
Parish has many unique sandwiches on their menu, created by their chefs and other local chefs. Pictured above is the Bond Herb Roasted Chicken Salad. Check out those fried onions on top. Joanne Chang of Flour Bakery has a BLT on the menu called the Flout BLT that's served on Texas toast. There are also a couple of vegetarian sandwiches and salads on the menu.
I ordered a half portion of their mac & cheese. It was one of the most delicious mac & cheeses I've ever had. It's buttery. The Ritz crumb topping was on point. The secret seems to be their sauce, made of Romano and Montery jack cheeses and just enough diced white onions. Amazing. They also have a bolognese on the menu, which I'm looking forward to trying.
Parish Cafe has two locations in Boston. This one in the South End on Mass Ave. Their other restaurant is on Boylston Street.

HANDCRAFTED BEER AT GRITTY MCDUFF'S OF MAINE

There are several candy machines at Gritty's.
Eat Up NE recently stopped by for lunch at their Freeport restaurant. I really liked the candy machines and helped myself to a handful of espresso coffee beans. In the summer you can eat inside or on their spacious outdoor porch. We sat down by the bar. I quickly ordered one of their seasonal beers, their Halloween Ale. It's an extra special bitter, that, as their website promises, is the perfect beer for a crisp fall day. Other seasonal beers include a Christmas Ale and a Vacationland Ale in the summer. You can buy six-packs to take home at Gritty's store.
Gritty's boasts a huge menu, packed full of bar favorites. Soups include chowder and chili. There are several salads like the crispy fried chicken salad or the McDuff Salad with apple, walnuts and bleu cheese. Sandwiches include pulled pork, reuben and a lamb gyro. Have a pizza from their stone oven or order a burger with any toppings you want. Entrees include Shepard's Pie, fish & chips and mac & cheese with chicken, kielbasa, steak, lobster or BBQ pulled pork.
Eat Up NE caught the end of their summer menu and enjoyed a lobster roll, fries and clam chowder. From their traditional pub food to homemade beers, Gritty McDuffy's is a must-try when visiting Maine. Eat Up NE is hoping to back this winter for the Christmas Ale.

KICKING OFF THE SUMMER AT JAKE 'N JOE'S IN WALTHAM
Friday, May 22, 2015
The new Jake 'N Joes in Waltham, Massachusetts is open just in time for the summer. This is a great spot for a cold beer and bar food. I enjoyed lunch outside on their large patio. It has a large couches, plenty of seating and a fire pit for customers to sit around. Inside, there are countless large TV's to watch sports on and a huge bar with a very large selection of drinks.
The menu at Jake 'N Joes is gigantic. It's hard to settle on one thing. There are burgers, salads, sandwiches, wraps, pizza, pasta and fish dishes. I enjoyed their sliders app as a meal with a chopped salad and a Sea Dog Bluepaw blueberry beer. It was all very tasty and filling. Jake 'N Joes also has daily combo lunch specials on their menu. Check out their newest location this summer and ask for a table outside!

LOBSTER TOUR 2015: SOLAS IN BOSTON
Thursday, May 07, 2015
On Tuesday, it was 80 degrees out in Boston. It was the perfect time to continue Eat Up New England's Lobster Tour 2015! I stopped at Solas in the Back Bay for my next lobster roll.
This Irish pub has all of the traditional Irish dishes, along with some tasty bar food. Apps include nachos, their amazing house made potato chips with dipping sauce (TRY THESE!), potato & cheese dumplings, sliders, quesadillas and egg rolls. There's a Guinness onion soup on the menu, but I went for a pint of my favorite beer instead. The main menu includes a bunch of burgers, a homemade veggie burgers, chicken pot pie, mac-n-cheese, shepherd's pie and beef stew.
The hot summery weather was the perfect excuse to try their lobster roll. A large portion of cold lobster salad was served on top of some lettuce and a buttery roll. It's served with a huge portion of homemade fries. There were enough fries for two people. Who knew you could find such a delicious lobster roll at an Irish pub?!
