SEVERAL UNO PIZZERIA AND GRILLE RESTAURANTS CLOSE

Wednesday, October 09, 2024

This Uno in Bellingham, MA is still open.

If you haven't been to Uno Pizzeria and Grille in awhile, now would be a great time to give them your business. The local chain best known for its Chicago-style deep dish pizza has closed a bunch of locations - places that were open for decades. Their Wrentham location that's in Wrentham Village is now closed. Their Framingham location also shuttered recently. Restaurants in Leominster, Millbury and Westborough locations also shut down this year, along with one in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Only 7 locations remain in Massachusetts according to their website.

It's sad to see what's happening to this longtime local chain. Inflation continues to wage war on the restaurant industry, along with skyrocketing leases and post-Covid recovery. People just can't afford to go out as much as they used to.

MOUTH-WATERING SLICES AT SAKIS PIZZA IN PROVIDENCE

Thursday, November 30, 2023

Grab a slice or two

Sakis Pizza in Providence

Meat lovers and chicken, broccoli & bacon slices

Sakis Pizza
Providence, RI

How The Grinch Stole Christmas: The Musical is back at PPAC this Christmas and it's a must-see for children and adults. After enjoying the Dr. Seuss Christmas classic, I wanted a quick bite and found some AMAZING pizza slices at Sakis Pizza across the street. Sakis offers a variety of mouth-watering slices for hungry customers to choose from. I loved their meat lovers and chicken, broccoli & bacon slices. Choose your slice and they will warm it up for you. They are generous with the cheese and the toppings. Sakis customers can also enjoy full pizzas, along with salads, burgers, calzones, pasta and wraps.

THE PIZZA HUT BUFFET IS ALIVE AND WELL!

Monday, July 24, 2023

Hot bar with pizza, pasta and bread sticks

The cold salad bar

Pizza Hut in Rochester, NH

In the 90's, I remember going to our local Pizza Hut for their buffet at lunch. There was a hot bar and a cold salad bar and it was all you can eat for around $4.99. Probably less. I thought the Pizza Hut buffet was long gone, until we made a stop in Rochester, New Hampshire. There it was. A big banner that read, "Buffet is Back." We had to try it out, and let me tell you, it felt like 1994 all over again.

There was the hot bar with pizza slices with a variety of toppings, baked ziti, those famous cheese bread sticks and cinnamon sticks. The cold salad bar was full of veggies like broccoli, cucumbers, cauliflower, along with slices ham, cheese and far too many salad dressings to choose from. All you can eat for $9.99. It's still a great deal. Our kids enjoyed it and so did mom and dad. A taste of unexpected nostalgia just off of the highway in New Hampshire.

UNIQUE WRAPS AT PAPA JOE'S WRAP SHACK IN BRISTOL, RI

Sunday, April 23, 2023

Lasagna wrap

Papa Joe's Wrap Shack

PAPA JOE'S WRAP SHACK
Bristol, RI

If you're looking for a quick and tasty spot to grab lunch while enjoying the waterfront community of Bristol, Rhode Island than look no further than Papa Joe's Wrap Shack. Their menu features all kinds of hearty, unique wraps.

There are hot wraps like The Bristolian with fried calamari, hot pepper rings, mozzarella, mixed greens and garlic mayo. There's an Asian-inspired Kung Pao Chicken wrap and the Harley Quinn with shaved steak, peppers, rice and more. The Wrap Shack offers a bunch of cold wraps like Chicken Caesar, The Garden of Eden made with a veggie burger and the Pearzola with grilled pears. I tried their Lasagna grilled wrap which is stuffed with pasta, meatballs, Pomodoro sauce and mozzarella. It was very good and filling.

The Wrap Shack also serves pizza. Make your own, or try one of their specialty pizzas. They even have a lasagna pizza, along with a shrimp-topped pie called The Scampi.

There is also a kids menu with a Fluffinator wrap, a mac & cheese wrap and a chicken fingers wrap.

The Wrap Shack has been in business since 2002 and is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday.

FAMILY FUN AT UNO!

Thursday, April 06, 2023

UNO's famous deep dish pizza.

The Easter Bunny is ready for his close-up.

A big shoutout to UNO for its family fun nights. Every Tuesday, kids eat free, but every now and then on a Tuesday, UNO hosts fun nights, usually around the holidays. This week, their location in Bellingham, Massachusetts put on an Easter egg decorating party. Children got to draw on wooden Easter eggs and took pictures with the above Easter Bunny. At Christmas, Santa was there along with cookie decorating. Last Mother's Day, we decorated a flower pot for mom. Eat Up New England LOVES these events that bring families together, not to mention it's a chance to enjoy one of their delicious deep dish pizzas!

MOUTH-WATERING DETROIT PIZZA AT BLUE SQUARE PIZZA

Wednesday, July 20, 2022

Mushroom Truffle Pizza

Blue Square Pizza
Hopkinton, MA

There's a new pizza shop that's getting a lot of buzz in Hopkinton. Blue Square Pizza recently opened up on Main Street. It specializes in gourmet Detroit-style pizza with a sourdough crust. Detroit-style pizza is rectangular and has a crispy, mouth-watering crust. There are a bunch of house specialties to choose from like mushroom truffle, summer veggie, sausage and red onion. Blue Square also offers traditional New York-style pizzas, along with salads, wings and breadsticks. But the Detroit pizza is the way to go. It's so good and so popular, that they often sell out early in the afternoon, so place your order early!

IT'S A PIZZA. IT'S A CUPCAKE. IT'S A PIZZA CUPCAKE!

Friday, May 13, 2022
Pepperoni Pizza Cupcakes

$9.99 for a box of 6.
The Pizza Cupcake is bringing pizza to snackers in a whole new way, in the form of a cupcake! On the outside, there’s a flaky and buttery crust. On the inside, gooey cheese and delicious sauce. It’s no wonder the creators of The Pizza Cupcake made a deal with Lori Greiner on Shark Tank. They are now available in select stores including Stew Leonard’s, which is where I found them in Connecticut. Choose from pepperoni and margherita.

PERFECT PIZZA AT NEWINGTON PIZZA

Monday, March 21, 2022

Check out that pie from Newington Pizza!

NEWINGTON PIZZA
Newington, CT

Newington Pizza is one of my favorite small, local pizza shops. It's been in business FOREVER and the pizza has been served the same forever. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

All of their pies are topped with a generous amount of cheese. And check out the cut! Instead of triangles, Newington Pizza cuts their pies into squares, and believe me, the center slices without the crust are delicious. I've been ordering their hamburger and mushroom pizzas since I was a teenager and am happy to say I still enjoy them today.

Newington Pizza also serves hot and cold subs, calzones, sandwiches salads, a bunch of apps and pastas. There is a small dining room, but most of their business is takeout.

HUGE SLICES TO GO AT CITIZEN CRUST'S SLICE BAR

Wednesday, June 23, 2021

Citizen Crust
Patriot Place
Foxboro, MA

Citizen Crust operates a full restaurant at Patriot Place in Foxboro, but their pizza is so good that they've opened a slice bar for people to grab slices on the go. Check out their Slice Bar, where they offer Roman sheet pizza, large slices with an extra crispy crust.

The Citizen Mac Daddy slice is my favorite. It's like a cheeseburger on a pizza. It's topped with ground beef, a special sauce, cheddar, mozzarella, tomato, shredded lettuce, chopped onion and pickles. Amazingly good. I also enjoyed one of their new slices, the Broad Street Bully. This one comes with shaved steak,. caramelized onions, jalepeno and cheddar. There are also more traditional slices like cheese and pepperoni, along with veggie and Margherita of Savoy slices which are meatless.

BEACH PIZZA IN SALISBURY: A TASTE OF SUMMER IN THE WINTER

Tuesday, February 04, 2020
Beach pizza
Hot out of the oven!
Cristy's has been serving slices for generations.
Cristy's
Salisbury, Massachusetts

For generations, pizza lovers have been treating themselves to slices of "beach pizza" at Cristy's on Broadway in Salisbury. This pizza shop, and its competition, Tripoli's, are steps from the beach. Cristy's only sells pizza, while Tripoli's also makes cannoli's from scratch. The locals all have a favorite shop and swear that one pizza is better than the other. I enjoy them both.

Beach pizza is baked by the sheet and sliced into squares. It comes out of the oven piping hot, which is good for melting a slice of provolone cheese on top. The sauce on beach pizza is also satisfyingly sweet. After decades, it's still very inexpensive, with two slices for a little less than $5.

Cristy's and Tripoli's are open year round, which means customers can get slices in the dead of winter just like I did yesterday.

NYC'S ARTICHOKE BASILLE'S PIZZA COMES TO CONNECTICUT

Saturday, August 31, 2019
Artichoke: their signature slice
Artichoke's is known for their big slices.
Newington, CT location
Artichoke Basille's
Newington, CT
www.artichokepizza.com

Artichoke Basille's pizza has been earning rave reviews and drawing huge crowds since it first opened in New York City's East Village in 2008. They are known for their delicious large slices of pizza. Artichoke's has opened its first location in New England, in Newington, Connecticut and they will soon expand to Hartford.

Their cozy Newington restaurant has just enough room for a bar and a few high top tables. The pizzas are sprawled out in front of their ovens. There are many slices to choose from like their signature artichoke slice with artichokes, spinach and cream sauce. Their meatball slice is really good and is topped with a generous portion of meat. They also make a Staten Island slice with meatballs, ricotta and onions. Artichoke's also offers crab, magherita, pepperoni and Sicilian slices.

Artichoke's slices are so good. Let's hope they continue to expand across New England!

CRISPY FLATBREADS AT THE RAIL TRAIL FLATBREAD COMPANY

Saturday, August 17, 2019
Zucchini & Tzatziki
Chicken Bacon Ranch flatbread
Half Mexican Street Corn half Farmers' Market
Lindemans Framboise
The Rail Trail Flatbread Company
Hudson, Massachusetts
www.railtrailflatbread.com

It was a feast for the senses the moment Eat Up New England stepped inside The Rail Trail Flatbread Company. More than a dozen flatbreads with all sorts of tasty toppings were on display, ready to be cooked inside of their wood-fired oven. Staffers donned in different shades of flannel were buzzing around, serving everything from poutine to juicy burgers.  All this as the smell of the wood-burning stove filled the air. It felt more like we were in Vermont or Maine, not Hudson, Massachusetts.

The bar boasts 20 taps with a rotating selection of beer, many of them from New England. They were even pouring Sip of Sunshine out of Waitsfield, Vermont. You don't see that at many restaurants outside of Vermont. I was excited to find Lindemans Framboise on their menu. This raspberry-flavored brew is from Belgium and goes down real easy.

Comfort food dominates Rail Trail's menu. Appetizers include mac & cheese, buffalo cauliflower and zucchini & tzatziki. This fried zucchini dish was fantastic, as was the pile of tzatziki that was served with it.

The flatbreads are the star of the show. There are several to choose from or customers can craft their own. Choose a sauce, cheese and toppings. You can also order half of one topping and half of another. I LOVED the chicken, bacon and ranch flatbread. The flavors of the toppings, along with a little caramelized onion and scallion worked so well together.

Rail Trail also serves burgers and salads, but be sure to treat yourself to one of their flatbreads, even if it's just a slice from your friend's pie.

BOSTON'S "BABBO" TO CLOSE

Monday, July 29, 2019
Saying goodbye in September 2019
Babbo's Ricotta Gnocchi
Babbo in Boston's Seaport is reportedly shutting down this fall. The Globe reports the formerly Mario Batali-backed pizzeria will be closed for good by September 15. 62 employees will be out of the job.

Babbo is known for its wood-fired pizzas, pastas and gelati. Batali got into the Boston restaurant scene for the first time with Babbo in 2015. He later divested his interests in Babbo and many other restaurants after he was accused of sexual misconduct.

HUGE SLICES AT ANTONIO'S PIZZA BY THE SLICE

Sunday, February 24, 2019
Large pizzas are lined up with an array of toppings.
Ground beef roni and mushroom slices
Antonio's in Providence
Antonio's: Pizza By The Slice
Providence, Rhode Island
www.antoniospizza.com

Antonio's is one of the many wonderful restaurants on bustling Thayer Street in Providence, Rhode Island. They specialize in pizza by the slice. At any given time, there are dozens of large slices with different toppings available.

There are classics like mushroom, Hawaiian, and sausage. They kick things up a notch with slices with several toppings like beef taco, potato bacon and ground beef roni. Antonio's bakes more than a dozen chicken pizzas like chicken parm, chicken, bacon & ranch, BBQ chicken & pineapple and BBQ chicken & tortellini. There are also many vegetarian pizzas like eggplant & peppers, tomato and artichoke pesto. Antonio's also offers Sicilian slices and full pizzas.

The selection of toppings at Antonio's is really something. It rivals any NYC pizza shop. By the way, if you want anything besides pizza, TOO BAD. It's all pizza, all of the time here. Why mess with perfection?

PERFECT PIZZA & SWEET TREATS AT THE FRAMINGHAM BAKING COMPANY

Thursday, January 17, 2019
The bakery was started by three immigrants from Italy in 1917.
Their famous cheesy sheet pizza.
Ganache Brownie - one of their Valentine's Day treats.
Framingham Baking Company
Framingham, Massachusetts
www.framinghambakingcompany.com

Open since 1917, the Framingham Baking Company is tucked in not far from downtown Framingham. Don't blink because you might just miss it. A small wooden sign is all that lets customers know about the deliciousness that awaits inside.

Everything at the Framingham Baking Company is made fresh right there. There are breads including Italiian bread, French bread, subs and rolls. For breakfast, go for their cinnamon rolls drizzled with icing and a variety of croissants. The pizza is what really puts Framingham Baking Company on the map. They are known for their sheets of pizza, square slices with lots of yummy cheese. Their broccoli & cheese pizza is one of my favorites. Their meatball and ham & pineapple slices are also fantastic. The toppings are different every day, so be sure to check their Facebook page to see what they are offering before stopping by. They also tend to sell out, so be sure to get their in time for lunch.

I can never leave the Framingham Baking Company without grabbing a bunch of sweet treats. Their anise cookies are fantastic. They always have mini loaves of chocolate cake and carrot cake, which I can never pass up. Seasonal baked goods are a delight throughout the year. Right now, there are "Go Patriots" football-shaped cookies. Romantics with a sweet tooth may prefer their heart-shaped ganache brownies and heart-shaped cookies for Valentine's Day.

PAPA GINO’S ABRUPTLY CLOSES DOZENS OF LOCATIONS

Sunday, November 04, 2018
Employees and customers alike were shocked today when dozens of Papa Gino’s and D’Angelo locations were permanently closed with no notice. Locations in Seekonk, Beverly, Mansfield and Chelsea are among the many that shut down along with several in Rhode Island. There are now about 95 locations left across New England, mostly in Massachusetts. Workers left suddenly jobless are being told they can reapply for positions at other locations. Customers on Twitter are outraged with the lack of warning especially as the holidays approach.

UPDATE: Papa Gino's And D'Angelos have been sold to a new owner. It seems the weakest stores were closed. The remaining locations will be remodeled.

THANKSGIVING ON A PIZZA

Friday, November 24, 2017
Thanksgiving Dinner Pizza
So many sub shops offer turkey and stuffing sandwiches this time of the year, but here's a new twist. Stew Leonard's in Newington, Connecticut is selling a Thanksgiving pizza. It's topped with turkey, potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and green beans. There's gravy instead of cheese and tomato sauce. Stew Leonard, Jr. got the idea after watching Mario Batali make one on "The Chew." If it's a hit this year, they will bring it back next Thanksgiving.

WELCOME BACK SWEET TOMATOES!

Tuesday, August 22, 2017
Open again
Sweet Tomatoes in West Newton, Massachusetts is finally back open. The popular pizza place has been closed for 18 months after a car crashed through their building and killed two people.

Eat Up New England enjoyed a couple of their HUGE slices for lunch today. It was very busy. I also overheard a few people congratulating the owners on their re-opening.

WHEN PIG'S FLY PIZZERIA IN KITTERY, MAINE

Sunday, February 19, 2017
When Pigs Fly is known for its breads all over New England, but they also have an AMAZING pizzeria in Kittery, Maine. Step inside and enjoy their cozy atmosphere: modern industrial meets rustic Maine. If you have to wait, When Pigs Fly has a bread store next door where customers can sample their breads, pastries and cinnamon rolls.

When Pigs Fly Pizzeria has a bar with local, national and international beers on tap. They also mix some yummy cocktails. Start your meal off with one of their snacks like crispy Brussels sprouts, a house made Bavarian pretzel, Thai curry mussels, chicken wings or falafel. My wife and I shared one of their salads. The Greek salad is plenty for two and is topped with a hearty portion of feta cheese. It was also amazingly fresh, like the lettuce and veggies had just been plucked from the garden.

For lunch, we enjoyed one of their wood-fired pizzas. It was half meatball and ricotta and half eggplant. Other pizzas include chicken & bacon, peppers & Italian sausage and four cheese & pesto or you can create your own. They also have several sandwiches, a raw bar and many daily specials to choose from. Desserts include a cheesecake of the day and ice cream sandwiches.

The food at When Pig's Fly Pizzeria is so fresh and filling, making it an Eat Up New England favorite. Check them out the next time your shopping at the outlets in Kittery.

TASTY & HEALTHY SLICES AT HILLSIDE ORGANIC PIZZA COMPANY

Friday, December 02, 2016
The mission of Hillside Organic Pizza in Bernardston, Massachusetts is to make food using healthy, local ingredients. Everything is handmade with natural and organic ingredients.

Hillside's menu features pizzas, salads and wraps. I enjoyed two massive slices, one with olives and mushrooms, the other with BBQ chicken. They were so tasty and filling. It felt good to eat local and natural food.

Hot wraps on the menu include the DJ Turkey with turkey, spinach, melted cheese, honey dijon and onion. There's the Ba-Da-Bing BBQ chicken, spinach, melted cheese and tomato. For salads, there's a traditional garden, a chicken curry, tuna and Feelin' feta, a Greek-inspired salad with feta and kalamata olives.

Hillside Organic Pizza has two other locations in Hadley and South Deerfield, Massachusetts. Their pizza are also sold frozen at many grocery stores in western Mass.
