ON THE ROAD AGAIN!
Wednesday, March 31, 2021
Cue Willie Nelson. Eat Up New England is back on the road again! After months of being stranded in Massachusetts with travel bans, New England is now open for travel. Let's hope it stays that way. Wear your masks. Keep your distance. Get your shots! BEGONE Covid-19.
I was so happy to return to an Eat Up New England favorite, The Rooster Company, in Newington, Connecticut. I once again enjoyed their half chicken with their AMAZING Parmesan sauce. Just look at that bird. So nice to be back!

The Rooster Company in Newington, Connecticut is one of Eat Up New England's favorites. I've blogged about it before, but I wanted to highlight a few delicious dishes I recently enjoyed there.
The Rooster Company's chicken wings are TO DIE FOR. There are a bunch of different flavors on the menu. I can't rave enough about their Parmesan boneless wings, along with their sweet & sour boneless wings. They are so flavorful and so tender. I also recommend their truffled mac & cheese as a side to any of their dishes. The flavor is fantastic on the pasta that's perfectly al dente.

PERFECT PIZZA & SWEET TREATS AT THE FRAMINGHAM BAKING COMPANY
Thursday, January 17, 2019
The bakery was started by three immigrants from Italy in 1917.
Their famous cheesy sheet pizza.
Ganache Brownie - one of their Valentine's Day treats.
Framingham, Massachusetts
www.framinghambakingcompany.com
Open since 1917, the Framingham Baking Company is tucked in not far from downtown Framingham. Don't blink because you might just miss it. A small wooden sign is all that lets customers know about the deliciousness that awaits inside.
Everything at the Framingham Baking Company is made fresh right there. There are breads including Italiian bread, French bread, subs and rolls. For breakfast, go for their cinnamon rolls drizzled with icing and a variety of croissants. The pizza is what really puts Framingham Baking Company on the map. They are known for their sheets of pizza, square slices with lots of yummy cheese. Their broccoli & cheese pizza is one of my favorites. Their meatball and ham & pineapple slices are also fantastic. The toppings are different every day, so be sure to check their Facebook page to see what they are offering before stopping by. They also tend to sell out, so be sure to get their in time for lunch.
I can never leave the Framingham Baking Company without grabbing a bunch of sweet treats. Their anise cookies are fantastic. They always have mini loaves of chocolate cake and carrot cake, which I can never pass up. Seasonal baked goods are a delight throughout the year. Right now, there are "Go Patriots" football-shaped cookies. Romantics with a sweet tooth may prefer their heart-shaped ganache brownies and heart-shaped cookies for Valentine's Day.

For decades, my family has always made reservations at The Old Grist Mill Tavern in Seekonk, Massachusetts for special occasions. Graduations. Anniversaries. Birthdays. Why do we keep coming back? The food is fantastic. The portions are perfect. There's a waterfall right outside, which makes for a super pleasant dining experience. And, of course, there's their salad bar. There aren't so many restaurants with salad bars anymore, but the Old Grist Mill Tavern has kept theirs going much to every diners delight.
Every meal begins with a basket of their fresh bread, which also includes their famous cinnamon bread and butter. The Tavern offers all kinds of fun cocktails. In the summer, I love their fishbowl.
The Tavern is known for its seafood and steak. For dinner, there are dishes like Baked Boston Scrod, Sea Scallops and Shrimp Scampi over Linguini. Diners can also order fresh lobsters of various sizes right out of the tank. They also offer prime rib, sirloin, filet mignon and ribeye steak combos. Pair your meat with grilled salmon, baked stuffed shrimp, lobster saute or a steamed lobster
Every summer, Old Grist Mill tavern celebrates lobster with their Lobster Feast. There are steamed lobsters, a lobster roll, seafood pie, lobster scampi and lobster salads. There are also lobster inspired starts like lobster bisque, lobster spring rolls and lobster stuffed mushrooms. I ordered their lobster mac & cheese. This rich dish is made of bowtie pasta, chunks of fresh lobster meat and topped off with crumbled Ritz crackers.

Buzzard's Bay - Wareham Line, Massachusetts
http://lobsterpotrestaurant.biz/
When the sun starts to shine and the temperature rises, The Lobster Pot is the first place Eat Up New England goes for an authentic seafood meal. This restaurant boasts an extensive menu with all of the Cape Cod classics.
I LOVE their clam strips plate. It comes with a pile of clam strips, crispy fries and cole slaw. I usually order a cup of their fantastic clam chowder to go with it. Other seafood dinners include fish & chips, oysters, scallops, calamari, shrimp and whole clams. The Lobster Pot also offers baked and boiled haddock, lobster and scallop dinners. Their lobster rolls are also amazing and jam-packed with fresh lobster meat. Be sure to check out their tank of live lobsters to eat. Some of them are pretty big. Their menu also includes burgers, a hot dog, grilled cheese and the summer classic, corn on the cob.
Customers can drink up at The Lobster Pot. They have a bar that's stocked with beer and wine. For dessert, there are frappes and ice cream sundaes.

WHEN PIG'S FLY PIZZERIA IN KITTERY, MAINE
Sunday, February 19, 2017
When Pigs Fly Pizzeria has a bar with local, national and international beers on tap. They also mix some yummy cocktails. Start your meal off with one of their snacks like crispy Brussels sprouts, a house made Bavarian pretzel, Thai curry mussels, chicken wings or falafel. My wife and I shared one of their salads. The Greek salad is plenty for two and is topped with a hearty portion of feta cheese. It was also amazingly fresh, like the lettuce and veggies had just been plucked from the garden.
For lunch, we enjoyed one of their wood-fired pizzas. It was half meatball and ricotta and half eggplant. Other pizzas include chicken & bacon, peppers & Italian sausage and four cheese & pesto or you can create your own. They also have several sandwiches, a raw bar and many daily specials to choose from. Desserts include a cheesecake of the day and ice cream sandwiches.
The food at When Pig's Fly Pizzeria is so fresh and filling, making it an Eat Up New England favorite. Check them out the next time your shopping at the outlets in Kittery.

VERMONT'S WHETSTONE STATION ADDS NEW ITEMS TO THEIR MENU
Monday, November 28, 2016
Fried Chicken Sammich
Poutine
Home-brewed beer!
Whetstone has added poutine to their appetizer menu. There's small and large sizes. It's amazing, as is their gravy. They also added a short rib mac 'n cheese skillet to their apps.
There are several new entrees including a beer braised brisket sandwich, peanut thai chicken wrap, chicken & waffles and fish & grits. I tried their new Fried Chicken Sammich, a perfectly fried piece of chicken on a challuh bun. Get it with fries or a salad.
Get a closer look at their new menu: HERE

EAT UP NE FAVORITE: SPoT!
Saturday, April 30, 2016
The amount of soda they have for sale is mind-blowing. Now, I'm not talking about five flavors of Coke and Pepsi. I'm talking sodas that are tough to find like candy cane and sugar cookie. They even have a gingerbread soda. It really is something. Customers can take their time checking out those drinks, because, yes, the lines at this local hot spot tend to be long. But, don't worry, it's all worth it.
SPoT! makes all of their bagels in house. There are trays and trays of them on racks. These bagels are MASSIVE and crusty. They're everything a perfect bagel should be. I love their bacon, egg and cheese bagel. In an age of fast food, it was truly something to watch the cook crack an egg right in front of me to make this sandwich. It doesn't get any fresher than that.
SPoT! also has a variety of hot and iced coffees. I loved their mint chocolate coffee. It wasn't just chocolate flavor. They pour some chocolate syrup right into the cup.
It doesn't get much better than SPoT!. Whether you're near or far, take some time out on a weekend morning to check this place out. You'll be glad you did.

INSIDE THE NEW ULTRA MODERN NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE'S IN WALTHAM
Tuesday, September 01, 2015
Check out the sparkling new Not Your Average Joe's in Waltham, Massachusetts. The place is beautiful inside and out, with high ceilings, a bar with flatscreen TV's, booths and high-top seating. There is also some patio seating outside which will be a nice place to sip on some fall beer in a few weeks. The food seemed to tasted better than ever when eat Up NE stopped by. Every meal begins with their fresh focaccia bread with oil, cheese and red pepper flack dip. My favorite meal is their mustard crusted chicken.
The new NYAJ location is right across from Jake 'n Joes in the new 1265 Main Street development.

EAT UP NEW ENGLAND FAVORITE: ANTHONY'S NORTH END DELI
Tuesday, March 24, 2015
Anthony's North End Deli in Plainville, Massachusetts has been one of my favorite places to eat since I was a child. I don't live anywhere near it anymore, but whenever I'm home I make it a priority to stop there. It's just that good.
The North End Deli specializes in all of the very best Italian foods. They will make any kind of sandwich fresh for you. Their pasta salads are so good. My favorite is their tortellini salad, which includes carrots and broccoli. Be sure to try one of their many calzones. My favorite is the Italian with pepperoni, salami, cheese and peppers. It's delicious hot or cold. Another favorite is their stuffed shells dish, which comes with four cheesy shells and a big ole meatball. You can get many of their dishes frozen and they taste wonderful when you warm them up.
No trip to the North End Deli is complete without some of their desserts. They have a huge showcase of Italian cookies. I always bring home a bag of their champagne cookies - you know - the ones with the sprinkles along the edges. I also enjoy their strawberry cheesecake and Zeppole for St. Joseph's Day.

(Closed) AN ITALIAN FEAST AT GRAPPA

Every meal begins with their mouth-watering garlic bread.

Stuffed mushrooms
![]() |
Chicken piccata
![]() |
Chocolate bomba
Every meal at Grappa starts with a tray of their garlic bread. It's soooo good and yes, they will bring you seconds. Apps include rolled eggplant, salads and bruschetta. My favorite is their baked stuffed mushrooms. They are overflowing with breadcrumbs and sprinkled with just enough cheese. They are also vegetarian.
You can find all of your Italian favorites on their dinner menu. My favorites include the fettucine bolognese, spaghetti carbonara, chicken piccata (pictured above) and shrimp scampi. Also on the menu, a catch of the day, several other chicken and veal options, spinach & ricotta ravioli and linguine with clams.
Save room for dessert and order their chocolate bomba. It's a ball chocolate and vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate. There are also almonds inside and a cherry in the center.
Grappa is open for DINNER only. Make reservations if you go on the weekend. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays. I discovered Grappa on Groupon and have been hooked ever since. They still put up deals on Groupon every now and then.

EAT UP NE FAVORITE: ROBERT'S MAINE GRILL

Half dessert - Blueberry crumble a la mode and whoopie pie w/ milk
From lobster to warm blueberry crumble, Robert's specializes in all of the foods that Maine is known for. Every meal begins with crackers and spread. It's so good. They have a raw bar packed with shrimp, oysters and clams that's as fresh as can be. Apps include lobster sliders on a buttermilk biscuit, Maine crab cakes, mussels, chicken tenders, friend Maine cheese. There are soups like New England clam chowder and haddock & leek chowder. How about a lobster cobb salad?
Robert's is open for lunch and dinner. Order a steamed Maine lobster or lobster BLT or lobster roll or mussels and lobster over linguine or lobster mac'n'cheese (dinner only.) They'll even hook you up with a tableside clambake for two with lobsters, steamers, mussels and corn on the cob. I loved the baked haddock with veggies and rice. Light and healthy. They also offer fried seafood. Their menu features several sandwiches and burgers for land lovers. Don't worry, they also have plenty of beer and wine.
You MUST save room dessert at Robert's. You'll notice their homemade pies as soon as you walk in and they are sooo good! The best thing about their dessert menu is that you can order a full or half size. We ordered half a blueberry crumble a la mode and half a whoopie pie with milk. These sweet treats were the perfect way to end a perfect meal. Robert's also has lime coconut cheesecake, raspberry pie a la mode, a brownie sundae and triple chocolate cake.
Before you leave, be sure to have a seat and take in the salt marsh to the left of the restaurant.
