ICE CREAM FLOATS FROM "FLOAT" ARE THE PERFECT TREAT ON A HOT SUMMER DAY

Friday, August 09, 2024
Float food truck

Orange creamsicle float

It's been on of the hottest summers in a long time in New England. If you can't take the heat like me, stop by the Float food truck. I recently tried it out for the first time at the Out To Lunch festival in Worcester. Their orange creamsicle ice cream float was so refreshing and delicious. They also make root beer floats and even an iced coffee float. There are also sorbet mocktails or go for just a scoop of ice cream. You can find Float at festivals in the Worcester area. Check out their website (www.floatft.com) and Instagram (@floatfoodtruck) for where they will be each week.

SIZZLIN SUMMER SPOTS: CRESCENT RIDGE DAIRY BAR

Thursday, June 15, 2023

A small cookie dough with sprinkles.

The ice cream is worth the wait.

Crescent Ridge Dairy Bar
Sharon, MA

Summer is finally here and that means it's time for ice cream. There are countless amazing ice cream shops around New England and Crescent Ridge Dairy Bar in Sharon is a favorite.

Crescent Ridge is known for their gigantic portions. A small is MASSIVE. Their website has pictures of all of their flavors, along with some of the products they sale. There are ice cream cakes, ice cream cupcakes and ice cream sandwiches. Crescent Ridge also sells milk and other drinks like lemonade, which can be delivered to your home.

Crescent Ridge is a busy place in the summer, so prepare for a wait especially on weekends. Customers can kill some time by checking out their pasture of cows and goats.

SUNDAE SCHOOL: A CAPE COD TRADITION

Saturday, June 18, 2022
Famous Sundae

Sundae School on a busy Saturday night

SUNDAE SCHOOL
Dennisport, MA

Cape Cod is the place for some of the finest ice cream around. One of the best spots to get it is at Sundae School in Dennisport. This place has been making summer memories for as long as I can remember. For so many people, it’s not summer unless you visit Sundae School.

My favorite is their Famous Sundae. Two scoops of ice cream, choose two sauces or toppings, homemade whipped cream and a cherry. The homemade whipped cream is sooo good.

Sundae School scoops up all of the classic favorites like Oreo, mint chocolate chip, and cookie dough. There are also fun flavored like Shark’s Tooth, Orange Pineapple and Milky Way. There are also milkshakes, banana splits and a sampler with four different flavors.

ICE CREAM SHORTAGE JUST IN TIME FOR THE SUMMER

Friday, May 20, 2022

There was plenty of cookie dough!

Out of some flavors

Murphy’s is always busy with lines of customers ordering ice cream.
Add ice cream to the list of what’s in short supply. Richardson’s Ice Cream was forced to stop production because they were having trouble getting enough sugar. This is trickling down to a bunch of ice cream shops in New England including Murphy’s in Ashland, Massachusetts. Eat Up New England spotted a sign up today noting that they were out of some flavors because of the Richardson’s issue. Fortunately, the ice cream maker says they now have enough sugar and are resuming production, so this this hopefully this ice cream shortage will soon be solved.

J.P Licks' Christmas Specials

The Grinch's Candy Cane Ice Cream Sundae

J.P. Lick's is offering some tempting ice cream sundae specials for the Christmas season. Choose from The Grinch's Candy Cane Ice Cream Sundae or Santa's Candy Cane Ice Cream Sundae. I went naughty and enjoyed a small Grinch sundae. They come in medium and large, too! I loved the minty ice cream, chocolate chips and candy cane.

J.P. Lick's is also selling several holiday-themed ice creams. New this year, "A Christmas Story: The Musical Oh Fudge!" ice cream, which is chocolate with pieces of fudge. There's also "Gingersnap Molasses" and "Candy Cane." Happy holidays!

Murphy's Eats & Treats
Ashland, Massachusetts
www.murphyseatsandtreats.com

It's June and summer is in full swing. It's time for another season of Eat Up New England's Sizzlin' Summer Spots. Our first stop this summer is Murphy's Eats and Treats in Ashland, Massachusetts.

Murphy's is the place where everyone in town goes for ice cream on a warm summer day. Their ice cream window makes you feel like you're on the Cape. They serve all of the classics like cookie dough and moose tracks. Murphy's also sells soft serve, including unique flavors like orange creamsicle.

Murphy's is also a good spot to quench your seafood craving. I enjoyed their clam strips plate, a large portion of clam strips over crinkle fries. Among their other seafood options are lobster rolls and a whole belly clam roll. They also offer burgers, hot dogs, salads. grilled cheese and kids meals.

After dinner and ice cream, check out Murphy's mini golf course.

IT'S PUMPKIN SEASON!

Sunday, September 30, 2018
Pumpkin ice cream from Abbott's Frozen Custard
Shipyard Pumpkinhead beer with a cinnamon rim
It's pumpkin season and Eat Up New England is ALL IN! Fall is one of my favorite times of year because of all of the pumpkin and pumpkin spice flavors foods and drinks.

There are so many pumpkin-flavored beers on the market these days, but I will always order a Shipyard Pumpkinhead, which is brewed in Maine. The flavor is fantastic especially when complimented with a cinnamon rim.

While we're talking about drinks, fall is pumpkin-flavored coffee season. I enjoy Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte as much as anyone else, but I often order it ICED and still topped off with whipped cream. Another amazing Starbucks drink this time of the year is their hot caramel apple cider.  Cold cider in New England is delicious from just about anywhere. Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury, Vermont and The Big Apple in Wrentham, Massachusetts are two of my favorite places for cider AND cider donuts. (See Eat Up New England's archives for full stories on both places.)

Pumpkin ice cream is also one of my fall favorites. Today, I enjoyed some pumpkin custard from Abbott's Frozen Custard at the Needham Fall Festival in Needham, Massachusetts. Bliss Dairy in Attleboro, Massachusetts also makes a fine pumpkin ice cream.

Grocery stores sell an outrageous amount of pumpkin-flavored items this time of the year. Trader Joe's is one of my favorite places for pumpkin. I love their Pumpkin O's cereal, pumpkin coffee, pumpkin waffles and spiced cider. My sister raves about their pumpkin cinnamon rolls. I haven't tried them, but I will soon.

Embrace the pumpkin. Enjoy the fall because we all know what season is next.

WALK UP TO THE ICE CREAM WINDOW AT MILDRED'S DAIRY BAR

Sunday, July 22, 2018
Root beer float
The Gobbler
Located at The Vermont Country Store
Mildred's Dairy Bar
Weston, Vermont

The Vermont Country Store is one of my favorite places to shop in Vermont. They offer unique gifts, a huge candy section, Vermont beers and cheeses to sample. After shopping, customers can check out Mildred's Dairy Bar in season.

Walk right up to the windows to order ice cream, milkshakes and sundaes. There are also traditional summer foods like hamburgers and hot dogs, along with a couple of turkey sandwiches, pulled pork sandwiches, salads and a grilled cheese made with Vermont cheddar. I enjoyed The Gobbler turkey sandwich, which is made with nice cuts of turkey (not the shiny cold cuts garbage), Vermont cheddar, tomatoes, lettuce and a cranberry mayo. I also could not resist their root beer float with a big old scoop of vanilla ice cream.

There's also a second Mildred's at the Vermont Country Store's other location in Rockingham, Vermont.

FREE CONE DAY 2018

Tuesday, April 10, 2018
Free Cone Day
It's that magical day that ice cream lovers look forward to every spring. It's Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's. Every April, the Vermont-based ice cream maker says thank you to all of its customers at all of its stores by giving them free ice cream cones or cups. I enjoyed their cookie dough today at their store in Natick, Massachusetts. I arrived just before the line started stretched around the corner. Going back for seconds or thirds is actually encouraged by Ben & Jerry's as long as you don't mind waiting in line again.

CABOT'S ICE CREAM & RESTAURANT IN NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS

Saturday, September 17, 2016
Cabot's is one of those old school restaurants that's been around for so long that everyone in the area knows all about it. Stop by at any hour of the day and you'll find this classic restaurant and ice cream shop packed full of locals of all ages.

Cabot's serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. For breakfast, they serve all of the classics like omelets, homemade muffins, pancakes, waffles, benedicts, eggs and French toast. They also have a huge lunch and dinner menu with burgers, salads, wraps, sandwiches, baked mac & cheese and a stuffed turkey dinner. Today, we ordered the onion petals, their take on onion rings. It was plenty for three of us. For lunch, I enjoyed their cheddar melt served with sautéed onions on rye.

What really puts Cabot's on the map is their ice cream. They have countless flavors and serve it in large portions. Right now, they have pumpkin ice cream for the fall, so I had to try that. The picture you see above is a SMALL! They also have a bunch of sundaes, frappes and ice cream sodas. Cabot's gets mobbed on Friday and Saturday nights for their ice cream especially in the summer.

Cabot's in CLOSED on Mondays and is CASH ONLY.

A visit to Old Orchard Beach, Maine just isn't complete without a bag of candy to bring home. Dickinson's Candy Factory has a mega selection of candy to satisfy any sweet tooth. Eat Up NE bagged some of their taffy, which comes in fun flavors like blueberry pancake, orange creamsicle and beach ball. Dickinson's also has several flavors of ice cream and fudge.

CEREAL MILK ICE CREAM AT MILK BAR IN NYC

Saturday, September 05, 2015
Milk Bar in New York City is the buzz of foodies because of their clever twists on traditional dessert favorites.  Eat Up NE recently stopped by their Midtown location and tried their cereal milk soft serve. It tastes like the milk leftover in the cereal. They'll even sprinkle it with some cornflakes. It's very good. Eat UP NE was addicted from the start. Milk Bar also has a cereal milk shake on the menu.

Milk also has some very tempting looking cakes, like apple pie and chocolate chip cakes. Creative cookies include the blueberry & cream cookie and their famous compost cookie with pretzels, potato chips, butterscotch and chocolate chips. They're also known for their "crack pie," which is described as "gooey butter cake meets chess pie."

If you're mouth is watering right now, you can order many of their tasty treats online:

SUMMER IS CREEMEE SEASON IN VERMONT!

Friday, August 14, 2015
No summer in New England is complete without a creemee from Vermont. Creemee is Vermont slang for soft ice cream. Eat Up New England made a couple of trips to Burlington Bay's ice cream window in Burlington, Vermont this past weekend. They have four creemee flavors: vanilla, chocolate, maple and black raspberry. Go for the black raspberry and maple twist. It is so unbelievably good and refreshing.

DELICIOUS CIDER DONUTS, COFFEE & MORE AT BOLTON ORCHARDS

Saturday, July 25, 2015
Eat Up New England discovered Bolton Orchards today while passing through Bolton, Massachusetts.  This place has everything you need. They have huge bins of apples, vegetables, jams, cheeses, pies and everything you'd expect to see for sale at an orchard. They also have an Italian bakery with pastries, cookies and cakes. There's a deli with sandwiches made fresh. They also have soups, salads and pizza. There's also a small coffee shop, Red Barn Coffee Café, with hot and iced coffees, teas, hot cider, hot chocolate and lattes. Eat Up NE recommends their chocolate raspberry hot coffee.

For the summer, customers can enjoy ice cream from their outdoor ice cream window. Choose from more than 30 flavors from Attleboro's Bliss Dairy. Eat Up NE recommends their wild blueberry crumble. They also sell pints/gallons of ice cream.  No trip to an orchard is complete without a cider donut. You can see them made fresh Fridays-Sundays. We bought a half dozen and they were still warm and crisp, covered with cinnamon. Bolton Orchards also sells bottles of their cold apple cider. You can try some for just 5 cents a cup!

SIZZLIN' SUMMER SPOTS: WHAT'S THE SCOOP ICE CREAM

Thursday, June 04, 2015

It's ice cream season on the Cape. There are so many places to get a cup or a cone. Eat Up New England recently discovered What's The Scoop in Dennis. This ice cream window is proud to offer Richardson's homemade ice cream and yogurt. There are a bunch of flavors to choose from. I got a small cone with coffee Oreo and cookie dough. They also sell sundaes, frappes and hot dogs.

What's The Scoop is open weekends only until mid June when they'll go 7 days a week for tourist season. The beach is within walking distance, so you may want to grab one of their ice creams to go.

SIZZLIN' SUMMER SPOTS: ICE CREAM AT THE WAGON WHEEL

Tuesday, May 19, 2015
It's hard to believe, but this weekend is already Memorial Day Weekend. It's the unofficial start of summer 2015. It's time to start up Eat Up New England's Sizzlin' Summer Spots. These are restaurants that offer the perfect feel of summer. They have ice cream windows or the perfect view of the ocean or a menu packed with local seafood. Welcome, summer 2015!

The first Sizzlin' Summer Spot of 2015 is The Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Gill, Massachusetts. (I've blogged about their food before, check the Eat Up NE archives.) This restaurant makes all of its ice cream. Step right up to their ice cream window to order some. I enjoyed a cone of their mint chocolate chip with sprinkles. There are a bunch of picnic tables to sit down and enjoy your summer treat. You can even play a quick round of cornhole on their lawn.

HUGE ICE CREAM SANDWICHES FROM THE COOKIE MONSTAH FOOD TRUCK

Tuesday, May 05, 2015
I've spotted the Cookie Monstah food truck all over Boston and today, I finally got to try one of their ice cream sandwiches. You can pick whatever kind of cookie you want, like chocolate chip, peanut butter, sprinkles and red velvet. Then, fill it with your favorite ice cream. I enjoyed "The Classic" with chocolate chip cookies and vanilla ice cream. Mmmm. You can catch the Cookie Monstah's trucks all over the city and at Sowa Sundays.
