COMFORT FOOD AND TASTY TREATS AT THE COMMON MAN ROADSIDE

Monday, August 25, 2025

Apple cider donut whoopie pie

Cuban sandwich

Hooksett, NH location

Turkey Gobbler

The Common Man Roadside
Various locations in New Hampshire

The Common Man has been a family favorite for hearty food for a long time. Now, hungry drivers can get their fix of The Common Man along with some gas or a six-pack of local beer. The Common Man Roadside locations have been popping up in places like Portsmouth and Hooksett and are the perfect place to stop on the way to the mountains or Story Land or Santa's Village.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are on the menu. There are breakfast sandwiches, veggie and meat skillets and several classic omelets to choose from.  For lunch and dinner, there is pizza by the pie or slice, along with deli sandwiches, hot sandwiches, salads, grilled cheese and mac and cheese. I loved their turkey gobbler hot sandwich, which is packed with turkey, stuffing, gravy and honey dijon cranberry dijonnaise on toasted buttered sourdough. Delicious and filling. I can also recommend their Cuban sandwich and try it with their homemade chips.

The star of the show for me was their apple cider donut whoopie pie. The chilled cream with the sweet and cinnamony cider donut make for a fall flavor explosion in your mouth. Crazy good. The Common Man Roadside also has some other exotic whoopies like a S'mores whoopie, peanut butter whoopie and Dubai whoopie. There is also cheesecake, brownies, cinnamon rolls, cookies and cannolis.

Just in case that wasn't enough, they offer an extensive menu of coffees to rival Starbucks. All of this is nestled inside of a convenience store which has a large selection of beer and wine, candy, chilled drinks and New Hampshire souvenirs. Run to The Common Man Roadside when your stomach starts growling the next time you're driving through New Hampshire!

RESTAURANT WEEK WITH A VIEW AT BISTRO 1828 IN KITTERY

Wednesday, April 16, 2025

The view of the water and a lighthouse from our table.

Roasted Leek & Fennel Bisque

Polenta Fries

Halibut Cake

Chocolate Lava Cake and Lemon Creme Brulee
Bistro 1828
Kittery, Maine

It was a snowy Saturday in April when we stopped by Bistro 1828 in Kittery, Maine. Finding this delightful restaurant on the water took our minds off of spring not being spring.

My wife and I were seated on the third floor, known as The Ski Club. It has its own little bar and the food is delivered from the floor below on a food elevator. The highlight is the view. We got the best table in the house overlooking the water and two lighthouses.

We were lucky enough to visit during restaurant week, so we were each able to try an appetizer, main course and dessert for $32 each. The polenta fries with feta were amazingly good and the roasted leek & fennel bisque was the perfect warm up on a chilly day. I enjoyed the halibut with fries for the main course. For dessert, it was chocolate lava cake and lemon creme brulee, which were the perfect end to a delicious meal.

DILL PICKLE PIZZA AND APPLE CIDER DEL'S LEMONADE: THE FOOD OF THE BIG E 2024

Thursday, September 19, 2024

If I have one Big E hack to share, it's go during the week. Wednesdays are the least crowded and that's when we went this year. It was wonderful going right up to the food vendors and ordering without waiting in long lines. Of course, our trip started with this legendary dessert, the iconic vanilla cream puff. They are also selling cookies and cream puffs this year, but I can't resist the classic.

Strawberry lemonade donut from Fluffy's. A tasty confection with a splash of lemonade that can be injected into the donut. It's good, but the $10 price tag was way too much.

Sure, there's a lot of buzz and long lines for the baked potatoes from Maine, but I enjoy the potatoes from Danny's Smokehouse outside of the Connecticut building. They will also top them off with cheese and broccoli, pulled pork and chili.

It wouldn't be the start of fall without Shipyard's Pumpkinhead beer. A number of vendors are selling this, the finest of all pumpkin beers. Make sure to get it with a cinnamon rim.

Dill Pickle Pizza from Angela's Pizza. Really good. They are also serving slices of Mexican street corn pizza.

Apple Cider Del's. The classic Del's lemon lemonade will always be my favorite, but I LOVED their frozen twist on apple cider.

Zack's Mac & Cheese. This mac and cheese with all of the fillings can be found at the entrance of the New Hampshire building. They make it for you fresh in small skillets. Have it plain of fill it with bacon, garlic or broccoli. Go for broke and add lobster. However you have it, it will be a delicious Big E memory.

IT'S ZEPPOLE TIME!

Thursday, February 08, 2024

Zeppole from Modern Pastry
It's the time of year for zeppole! These Italian sweet treats pop up at bakeries in the winter to celebrate St. Joseph's Day, which is on March 19. I found these pastries at the legendary Modern Pastry in Boston's North End. There are filled with sweet ricotta and each has a cherry or two inside. Zeppole are just so good. They are also a reminder that spring is just around the corner.

GENEROUS PORTIONS OF COMFORT FOOD AT LUCKY DOG TAVERN IN NORTH SMITHFIELD, RI

Sunday, January 29, 2023
Lucky Dog Tavern in North Smithfield, RI

A sample of beer.

Eggplant parmigiana

Beef short rib & cheddar grilled cheese

Chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream

Lucky Dog Tavern
North Smithfield, RI

It's always a good sign to arrive at a restaurant you've never tried before and get a rave review from a long-time customer. As we were waiting for our table, one of Lucky Dog Tavern's loyal customers had just eaten and told us that it's one of her favorite spots and all of the food is fantastic. She was right.

Lucky Dog Tavern is nestled on the bottom floor of a two-story home in North Smithfield. It is small, but the food is mighty good. My wife and I enjoyed the perfect meal from start to finish. Our waitress, Raelynn, was as good as it gets. She was highly knowledgeable of everything on the menu, went out of her way to check in on us and make recommendations. When I wasn't sure which beer I wanted to try, she brought over a sample.

The menu is full of comfort food favorites including apps like stuffed mushrooms, Tavern poutine, lobster poutine and calamari. Warm up with some French onion soup or lobster bisque.

Entrees include flappers aka wings, quesadillas, burgers, pastas, sandwiches, chicken, veal,  and seafood dishes. Lucky Dog also serves up steak tips, a sirloin strip and plenty of hearty daily specials. I ordered one of their gourmet grilled cheeses, the beef short rib and cheddar grilled cheese, which was fantastic. My wife enjoyed the large plate of eggplant parm, and there was plenty to bring home.

Since the meal was so good, we had to order dessert. We loved the molten chocolate lava cake, which comes with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. You would never know it's gluten free. There's also a house-made bread pudding for dessert that looks amazing.

Lucky Dog Tavern is one of the best restaurants I've been to in a long time, but make a reservation because it gets busy especially on weekends.

THE WHOO(PIE) WAGON

Saturday, October 10, 2020

The Whoo(pie) Wagon

It's always a good day when the Whoopie Wagon rolls into town. Today, it spent the day at Weston Nurseries in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. This food truck offers many tasty takes on the traditional whoopie pie. This time of year they are baking a pumpkin whoopie with cream cheese filling. It is amazing. Other flavors include apple caramel, chocolate chip, red velvet and carrot.

Mike's Pastry in Somerville
I have FINALLY tried the newish Mike's Pastry in Assembly Row in Somerville, Massachusetts. It's a smaller version of their iconic shop in the North End of Boston that offers many of its amazing Italian desserts. You can't leave Mike's without a cannoli, which come in many flavors. They also have tons of cookies, cheesecake, cakes, pies and coffees. It's a true treat for people in the Somerville area who now don't have to go into the city for a taste of the North End.

These are some tasty cookies. There are traditional cookies like chocolate chunk, peanut butter cup, M&M's, snickerdoodle and double chocolate mint. They also have their own tasty batches of deluxe cookies like chocolate peanut butter cup and s'mores.  I loved their chocolate peanut butter cup cookie. It's a peanut butter cookie with peanut butter cups in it. It's served warm with ooey gooey warm peanut butter cup chunks in it.

Order one or a couple cookies or box them up to share. They have deals like the Six Pack, which includes 6 cookies. There's a Major Rager, which includes 18 traditional cookies. Or go nuts with The Insomniac, which is made up of 24 traditional cookies.

PERFECT PIZZA & SWEET TREATS AT THE FRAMINGHAM BAKING COMPANY

Thursday, January 17, 2019
The bakery was started by three immigrants from Italy in 1917.
Their famous cheesy sheet pizza.
Ganache Brownie - one of their Valentine's Day treats.
Framingham Baking Company
Framingham, Massachusetts
www.framinghambakingcompany.com

Open since 1917, the Framingham Baking Company is tucked in not far from downtown Framingham. Don't blink because you might just miss it. A small wooden sign is all that lets customers know about the deliciousness that awaits inside.

Everything at the Framingham Baking Company is made fresh right there. There are breads including Italiian bread, French bread, subs and rolls. For breakfast, go for their cinnamon rolls drizzled with icing and a variety of croissants. The pizza is what really puts Framingham Baking Company on the map. They are known for their sheets of pizza, square slices with lots of yummy cheese. Their broccoli & cheese pizza is one of my favorites. Their meatball and ham & pineapple slices are also fantastic. The toppings are different every day, so be sure to check their Facebook page to see what they are offering before stopping by. They also tend to sell out, so be sure to get their in time for lunch.

I can never leave the Framingham Baking Company without grabbing a bunch of sweet treats. Their anise cookies are fantastic. They always have mini loaves of chocolate cake and carrot cake, which I can never pass up. Seasonal baked goods are a delight throughout the year. Right now, there are "Go Patriots" football-shaped cookies. Romantics with a sweet tooth may prefer their heart-shaped ganache brownies and heart-shaped cookies for Valentine's Day.

Steak frites, fries and mushrooms at Earls
Key lime pie at Southern Kin Kitchen
It wouldn't have been proper to end 2017 without a good meal. This year, Eat Up New England and friends checked out some of the restaurants at Assembly Square in Somerville, Massachusetts. We enjoyed dinner at Earls. We started off with a couple of apps. Their warm spinach and three cheese dip was very good. It's complemented very nicely by artichokes and feta cheese. For dinner, I enjoyed their steak frites, fries and marinated mushrooms.  We went to the Southern Kin Kitchen for dessert. Their key lime pie is fantastic! Happy New Year to all of my readers! May 2018 be full of good food.

KICKING OFF "DINE OUT BOSTON" AT STREGA IN THE NORTH END

Monday, August 07, 2017
Course 1: Calamari
Course 2: Fettuccini Carbonara
Course 3: Tiramisu
Strega on Hanover Street
Strega
www.stregaristorante.com

Dine Out Boston is in full swing, and there is no better place to kick off restaurant week than in the North End. Strega is offering a three-course lunch menu for just $20.

We had the best table in the house. Up front, with the window open on a beautiful summer day. It was only made better by this fine food and a parade that just happened to be passing by.

The meal started with their delicious olive bread, olive oil and olives. For course one, I enjoyed their light and fresh calamari, which is served with plenty of warm sauce. I really enjoyed their fettuccini carbonara for my main course. The pasta was homemade and the sauce was perfectly creamy. For dessert, I choose the cold and refreshing tiramisu over a cannoli.

Dine Out Boston is going from August 6-11 and 13-18.  Log on to DineOutBoston.com to check out menus from restaurants in Boston and the 'burbs.

CELEBRATING THE DESSERTS AT WELLFLEET HOT-SPOT MOBY DICK'S

Monday, June 26, 2017
Strawberry Shortcake
Key Lime Pie: Moby's signature dessert
Moby Dick's
Wellfleet, Massachusetts
mobydicksrestaurant.com

Since I was a child vacationing on the Cape, Moby Dick's was always the first place to stop. It's where I learned to enjoy seafood. Moby's is also famous for their desserts. Particularly, their key lime pie. The pie itself is cool and refreshing. The homemade graham cracker crust is amazing. It's no wonder why their key lime pie is their signature dessert.

Eat Up New England also recommends Moby's strawberry shortcake. The whipped cream is homemade and they don't skimp on the strawberries. Moby Dick's dessert menu also has several ice creams, Moby Madness (aka a huge hot fudge sundae) and homemade blueberry crisp. Not to mention, frappes, a root beer float and an ice cold lemonade freeze. The freeze is a blend of lemonade and lemon sorbet. It will cool you off on the hottest of days.

HAPPY EARLY THANKSGIVING!

Friday, November 18, 2016
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. There's just something so special about chowing down on a home-cooked meal with your family. My mother's pumpkin pie is always one of the highlights of Thanksgiving, but sometimes I just can't wait. Today, I stopped by the 50's Diner in Dedham, Massachusetts and got a slice of their pumpkin pie to go. Good stuff - a nice pumpkin taste and crisp, homemade crust. It was just what I needed before I went back to work. Happy (early) Thanksgiving to you and yours.

BOOZY CUPCAKES AT NORA CUPCAKE COMPANY IN CONNECTICUT

Saturday, August 06, 2016
NoRA Cupcake Company prides itself on being "not your mother's cupcake company." One look at their cupcakes and you'll understand what they mean by that. Their cupcakes are HUGE. Eat Up New England stopped by 4th of July weekend and ordered the patriotic chocolate cupcake pictured above. It was so large that I saved half for later.

NoRA offers an impressively long list of flavors that differ from day to day. There's the "Adult Twinkie," a yellow cupcake filled with whipped cream filling. The "Time to Make the Donuts" cupcake is coffee cake, cream filling with cinnamon cream cheese frosting.  Or try the Pan-Cup-Cake Bacon," a maple cupcake top with cream cheese frosting, candied bacon and toasted walnuts. The list goes on and on.

NoRA also has a long list of cupcakes based on drinks. They call them "Dranks." There's the Irish Car Bomb made with chocolate Guinness cake. There's a Blackberry Margarita cupcake made with vanilla margarita cake mix with blackberries. There's a hot cocoa cupcake. An espresso cupcake. A White Russian. A strawberry peach lemonade cupcake. A root beer float cupcake. See why they say they're "not your mother's cupcake company." I've never seen a cupcake shop with so many different and unique flavors. It's truly impressive.

NoRA has two locations in Connecticut: West Hardford and Middletown.

NoRA tweets out their menu everyday. Follow them @NoRACupcakeCo.
