BOOZY CUPCAKES AT NORA CUPCAKE COMPANY IN CONNECTICUT

Saturday, August 06, 2016
NoRA Cupcake Company prides itself on being "not your mother's cupcake company." One look at their cupcakes and you'll understand what they mean by that. Their cupcakes are HUGE. Eat Up New England stopped by 4th of July weekend and ordered the patriotic chocolate cupcake pictured above. It was so large that I saved half for later.

NoRA offers an impressively long list of flavors that differ from day to day. There's the "Adult Twinkie," a yellow cupcake filled with whipped cream filling. The "Time to Make the Donuts" cupcake is coffee cake, cream filling with cinnamon cream cheese frosting.  Or try the Pan-Cup-Cake Bacon," a maple cupcake top with cream cheese frosting, candied bacon and toasted walnuts. The list goes on and on.

NoRA also has a long list of cupcakes based on drinks. They call them "Dranks." There's the Irish Car Bomb made with chocolate Guinness cake. There's a Blackberry Margarita cupcake made with vanilla margarita cake mix with blackberries. There's a hot cocoa cupcake. An espresso cupcake. A White Russian. A strawberry peach lemonade cupcake. A root beer float cupcake. See why they say they're "not your mother's cupcake company." I've never seen a cupcake shop with so many different and unique flavors. It's truly impressive.

NoRA has two locations in Connecticut: West Hardford and Middletown.

NoRA tweets out their menu everyday. Follow them @NoRACupcakeCo.

CELEBRATE MARDI GRAS AT CUPCAKE CITY

Tuesday, February 17, 2015
It's time for Mardi Gras! While everyone is celebrating in New Orleans, you can get a taste of the fun here in snowy New England. Right now, Cupcake City is selling these Mardi Gras inspired cupcakes. I got this one at their store in Newtonville.

DEFLATE-GATE CUPCAKES

Thursday, January 22, 2015

New England restaurants and bake shops are getting creative over the Patriots' Deflate-Gate. These cupcakes are currently available at Cupcake City out of North Reading. They have another location in Newton, too. As you can see, they're celebrating the Patriots with messages like "Get Over It " and "Deflate This." The football cupcake is their deflated cupcake and only has half of the amount of cream as usual. I had that one and it's sooo good!

In Boston, the Boston Common Coffee Company is selling Deflate-Gate cookies. They are selling fast and were even featured on The Today Show. On Martha's Vineyard, Sharky's Restaurant is selling a Deflate Nacho Plate with the beans on top in the shape of a deflated football.

WELCOMING FALL FOODS ON THE WEST COAST

Tuesday, September 02, 2014
It's always hard to let go of the summer. When should we start drinking pumpkin beer? When do you have that first cider donut? This year, I kicked fall food season on the west coast.

Fall is one of my favorite seasons because EVERYTHING is pumpkin-flavored and, God, do I love pumpkin! My first pumpkin food of the season is the pumpkin waffle you see above. I devoured this breakfast with a fall twist at Cafe 222 in San Diego. It was so light and fluffy, with plenty of pumpkin taste. The butter even had a little blueberry in it.

Check out that cupcake! You're looking at a pumpkin cupcake with cream cheese frosting. It's from the famed Sprinkles in Las Vegas. All of their cupcakes are crazy good and this one was no exception!

Sure, the end of the summer is sad, but all of the fall foods that are on the way should be enough to make us all smile.

BTW, I haven't had any pumpkin beer YET, but I can picture myself pouring some Shipyard Pumpkinhead in the near future. Yes, with a cinnamon rim!

EAT UP NE FAVORITE: MIKE'S PASTRY

Sunday, August 17, 2014
It's impossible for me to take a trip to the North End in Boston without stopping at Mike's Pastry. This Italian bakery is LEGENDARY on Hanover Street and once you order anything on their menu, you'll know why.

From cupcakes to cookies, they have every kind of baked good and sweet you can image. They even have several flavors of gelato. There are so many different kinds of cannolis. It's tough to pick one, so bring a bunch home. My favorite is their choclate chip cannoli. The shell is the perfect texture and the filling is off of the charts! Perfection. I also can't seem to leave Mike's Pastry without a bag of their champage cookies - you know, the Italian cookies with sprinkles around the edges. And did I mention their strawberry cheesecake? Out of this world.

Mike's is always packed with locals and tourists, but don't let the line intimidate you. Us locals know how to quickly make your way to the front and even if you don't, you'll be in and out in no time. No trip to the North End is complete without a visit to Mike's.

CRUMBS BAKE SHOP CLOSES ALL LOCATIONS!

Tuesday, July 08, 2014
The Crumbs shop at the Natick Mall
It's proof that the cupcake craze is cooling down. Crumbs Bake Shop has abruptly closed every single one of its stores. Even the ones in New York City.

In a statement to the Wall Street Journal Crumbs announced the sad news, "Regrettably Crumbs has been forced to cease operations and is immediately attending to the dislocation of its devoted employees while it evaluates its limited remaining options." Days ago, the chain was suspended from Nasdaq, which triggered a default on its debt. As of 8:45 am/ET on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, the Crumbs website was still up as if nothing had happened.

So, why did this popular cupcake shop lose it all? My educated guess: they expanded way too quickly. At first, Crumbs was an NYC thing. I would always stop by during a visit to the city and get my favorite, the Baba Booey. But then, I noticed I could get the Baba Booey at Crumbs in Natick, Mass. Then, I could order it at a couple of locations in the Prudential Center in Boston. Crumbs quickly popped up at the Providence Place Mall in Rhode Island. Then, Westfarms Mall in Connecticut. You get the picture. Too many stores in too little time with too few customers. It's too bad. There's still hope that Crumbs will get it together. Maybe they will reopen a few of their NYC spots. For now, at least we will have Georgetown Cupcake.

MAKE IT MINI AT MY LITTLE CUPCAKE IN VERMONT

Sunday, November 10, 2013
Big cupcakes smothered with frosting can sometime be too much. That's where My Little Cupcake in Burlington and Essex, Vermont comes in. They specialize in small cupcakes. This makes it much easier to sample their long list of flavors. We got a half dozen, including some cute ghost cupcakes for Halloween and they are delicious.

My Little Cupcake really does have every kind of cupcake imaginable. There are the standards like chocolate, vanilla, carrot cake and cookies and cream. Walk on the wild side with some more exotic flavors like Vermont maple walnut, s'mores, pumpkin chocolate chip, blueberry pancake and margarita. Check out their website to see pics of all of their cupcakes and read more about their flavors. If you're really hungry, My Little Cupcake also sells big cupcakes. Many of them have fillings. They also have coffee and hot apple cider to warm you up on these cold fall days.

CUPCAKE CHARLIE'S NOW OPEN IN FOXBORO, MA

Sunday, November 10, 2013
Business is booming at the new Cupcake Charlie's at Patriot Place in Foxboro, Massachusetts. When I was there yesterday, the line was out the door. Fortunately, the wait time wasn't long. I went for a more traditional chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting. Very good. They also sell many cupcakes with fillings like raspberry and chocolate. Their cupcake of the month is pumpkin pie and looks hearty enough to eat as a meal. If you're looking for an easy Thanksgiving dessert, Cupcake Charlie's is also taking orders for Thanksgiving cupcakes.

CUPCAKE CHARLIE'S IN NEWPORT, RI

Monday, August 12, 2013
The next time you're checking out all of the shops in Newport, Rhode Island, stop into Cupcake Charlie's for a sweet treat.  Choose from more than a dozen flavors each day including orange dreamsicle, carrot cake and Oreo delight. Their chocolate mint madness cupcake is one of my favorites. If you have a real sweet tooth, Charlie's also sells shots of their frosting. You don't have to travel all the way to Newport for one of these cupcakes. Cupcake Charlie's is expanding with its newest location in at Legacy Place in Foxboro, MA.

YUMMY CUPCAKES FROM CUPCAKE CITY

Monday, June 10, 2013
My never-ending quest for cupcakes continued yesterday at the SoWa Open Market in Boston. I enjoyed a cupcake from Cupcake City in Reading. A mint chocolate chip cupcake to be exact, topped off with an Andes mint. The chocolate cake was light and fluffy and there was just enough mint chocolate-flavored frosting. I'm looking forward to trying out some of their other flavors including strawberry shortcake, key lime pie, peanut butter, coconut, lemon, Oreo, cherry bomb and banana. They even offer gluten-free cupcakes. Look for their pink van at SoWa or check out their shop on Main Street in Reading, Massachusetts.

GEORGETOWN CUPCAKE ON NEWBURY STREET IN BOSTON

Saturday, May 11, 2013
UPDATE: Sadly, Georgetown Cupcake closed in 2023.

No doubt you've seen Georgetown Cupcake on TLC's hit reality series, "DC Cupcakes." Now, we're lucky to have one of their cupcake shops right here in New England, on Boston's Newbury Street.

If you haven't been, prepare to be overwhelmed by a huge selection of cupcakes. It's impossible to decide on just one and tough to pick out a half dozen. You really want to try them all. Georgetown Cupcake has several flavors that you can pick up everyday. There bake several chocolate cupcakes, from chocolate birthday and chocolate & vanilla to double milk birthday chocolate and chocolate ganache. There's also red velvet and vanilla & chocolate. There are special cupcakes made each day of the week. Depending on the day you visit, you can get carrot, mint cookies & cream, pumpkin spice, lemon berry, maple, mocha, toffee crunch, cookie & creme and peanut butter fudge cupcakes. They also offer up vegan and gluten-free cupcakes including the vegan apple cinnamon and gluten-free chocolate coconut. See why it's so hard to decide on just one or two cupcakes? Be sure to pick up their daily cupcake menu so you know what varieties are available when you visit.

Cupcakes are $2.75 each. The cake is rich and moist. So many cupcake shops have a tendency to put way too much sugary frosting on top. It overpowers the cupcake. Not at Georgetown Cupcake. The frosting is spread to perfection.

There are only a few other Georgetown Cupcake shops in the country -  Washington, D.C., NYC, Los Angeles and Bethesda, MD. We're lucky to have one in New England. There's a reason everyone's buzzing about Georgetown Cupcake. These cupcakes are the real deal.

CRUMBS BAKE SHOP OPENS IN NATICK

Wednesday, February 06, 2013
Here it is. The Crumbs Bake Shop inside of the Natick Mall. They have cupcakes in three different sizes, depending on how much you're counting calories. It's located on the second floor, right about the water fountain. And, yes, it turns out they do have the Ba Ba Booey!

(Closed) CRUMBS BAKE SHOP IN BOSTON

Wednesday, February 06, 2013
UPDATE: All New England Crumbs locations have closed.

If you've ever listened to the Howard Stern show, then you already know about Crumbs Bake Shop in New York City (and now in Massachusetts)! They are famous for their sinfully sweet cupcakes that come in a range of unique flavors. Get a chocolate or vanilla cupcake somewhere else. When you're at crumbs, go all out. Try the Apple Cobbler or the Grasshopper or the White Hot Chocolate.

Longtime Howard Stern producer Gary Dell'Abate is huge fan of Crumbs and is always talking about it on Stern's Sirius/XM show. So much so, that in NYC, you can get a cupcake called the Ba Ba Booey (Gary's nickname). I've had it twice and as I'm writing this, I wish I was eating one right now. The Ba Ba Booey is a chocolate cupcake filled with cream cheese. It has two kinds of frosty - chocolate cream cheese and peanut butter cream cheese. The frosting is topped off with mini peanut butter chips. Amazing.

If you're craving one and live close to Boston, you're in luck. Crumbs has opened up several shops in and around the city. There are now Crumbs Bake Shops in the Prudential Center and the Natick and Burlington Malls. Crumbs will also be opening up at South Shore Plaza.
