COMFORT FOOD AND TASTY TREATS AT THE COMMON MAN ROADSIDE

Monday, August 25, 2025

Apple cider donut whoopie pie

Cuban sandwich

Hooksett, NH location

Turkey Gobbler

The Common Man Roadside
Various locations in New Hampshire

The Common Man has been a family favorite for hearty food for a long time. Now, hungry drivers can get their fix of The Common Man along with some gas or a six-pack of local beer. The Common Man Roadside locations have been popping up in places like Portsmouth and Hooksett and are the perfect place to stop on the way to the mountains or Story Land or Santa's Village.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are on the menu. There are breakfast sandwiches, veggie and meat skillets and several classic omelets to choose from.  For lunch and dinner, there is pizza by the pie or slice, along with deli sandwiches, hot sandwiches, salads, grilled cheese and mac and cheese. I loved their turkey gobbler hot sandwich, which is packed with turkey, stuffing, gravy and honey dijon cranberry dijonnaise on toasted buttered sourdough. Delicious and filling. I can also recommend their Cuban sandwich and try it with their homemade chips.

The star of the show for me was their apple cider donut whoopie pie. The chilled cream with the sweet and cinnamony cider donut make for a fall flavor explosion in your mouth. Crazy good. The Common Man Roadside also has some other exotic whoopies like a S'mores whoopie, peanut butter whoopie and Dubai whoopie. There is also cheesecake, brownies, cinnamon rolls, cookies and cannolis.

Just in case that wasn't enough, they offer an extensive menu of coffees to rival Starbucks. All of this is nestled inside of a convenience store which has a large selection of beer and wine, candy, chilled drinks and New Hampshire souvenirs. Run to The Common Man Roadside when your stomach starts growling the next time you're driving through New Hampshire!

MIGHTY SUBS CALLS IT A DAY

Friday, July 28, 2023

Mighty Subs closes after 33 years.

After 33 years, the popular Mighty Subs is closing. This little sub shop and its owners Artie and Karen Wright are beloved in Needham, Massachusetts. They are known for their gigantic sandwiches, so much so that their slogan is, "Our Small is Their Large." The owners are stepping away to spend more time with their family. Lines for lunch have been out the door over the past week. I've heard they have run out of bread, and even some of their meats because they have been so slammed. Best wishes to the owners in their well-deserved retirement!

GIGANTIC SANDWICHES AT BUSHEL N PECK

Sunday, July 03, 2022
The Jenerator

Bushel N Peck's Grafton location

Tons of drinks, chips and frozen entrees

Mac & cheese, kebobs and lasagna fill one of their showcases.

Bushel N Peck
Grafton, Clinton, Worcester & Westboro Massachusetts

Bring along a healthy appetite at the Bushel N Peck, a deli with a number of locations across Massachusetts. Eat Up New England visited their Grafton spot and was wowed by the selection.

There are a number of "creative combos" sandwiches to choose from. I ordered the "Jenerator." This large sandwich on half of an Italian bread comes with ham, bacon, swiss cheese, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mayo and honey mustard. It's fantastic. You can also custom order a sandwich of your own, with a variety of meats, breads, spreads and topping to choose from. There are salads, soups, wraps, vegetarian options and hot sandwiches, including a Pork Belly BLT made with thick cut bacon, melted cheddar, lettuce and tomatoes with Sriracha aioli.

Be sure to check out their showcases which are filled with entrees like meat lasagna, kebobs, mac & cheese, chicken and a number of cold pasta salads. They even had a fried cheesecake when we visited. There's a seemingly endless selection of drinks and chips. You can also get frozen pizzas, pastas and more to go. Another bonus: as prices skyrocket everywhere, I thought Bushel N Peck's prices were very fair.

PERFECT PANINIS AT HOT TABLE

Sunday, November 07, 2021

Cranberry turkey club

Hot Table
Framingham, MA

Hot Table specializes in amazingly delicious paninis filled with whatever you'd like. This small local chain recently opened its latest location in Shoppers World in Framingham and I am so glad I stopped by.

The bread for the paninis is made fresh in house. Choose from small, medium or large. I LOVED their large cranberry turkey club. This limited time special is stuffed with turkey, crumbled bacon, lettuce, American cheese and a tasty cranberry mayo. It was the best panini I've ever eaten.

There are so many other panini options on their menu like a chicken pesto, chicken parm, spicy bbq pork and Italian cold cut. There are a ton of sandwich stuffers and fillers to make whatever kind of panini you can dream up. Hot Table also offers a few salads on their menu, along with some soups. Fountain drinks round out the meal. I enjoyed their cranberry lemonade.

Hot Table has a hand full of other locations in Massachusetts including in Marlboro and Worcester, along with a few in Connecticut. Hot Table also has an app where guests earn points for free food.

JERSEY MIKE'S IS EXPANDING ACROSS MASSACHUSETTS

Wednesday, August 04, 2021

Sub shop Jersey Mike's is exploding across Massachusetts. They have already opened a bunch of new locations in recent months and more are on the way. The chain is set to open locations in Plainville, Milford, Saugus, Shrewsbury, Fairhaven and Stoneham. Jersey Mike's is known for their fresh sliced deli meats on fresh baked bread. Their cheese steaks and Italian sub are among my favorites. Eat Up New England is happy to see them expanding.

THE BAGEL TABLE OPENS IN ASHLAND

Sunday, December 02, 2018
The large variety of bagels at The Bagel Table.
Italian sandwich
They also bake sweets like cupcakes and whoopie pies.
The Bagel Table
Ashland, Massachusetts
www.mybageltable.com

There's a new place to kick off your day in Ashland, Massachusetts. The Bagel Table is now open for business. The owners started off selling their bagels at local farmer's markets. They were so popular that they opened their first store in Chestnut Hill, and now, this second shop on Main Street in Ashland.

They specialize in New York style bagels in a variety of flavors from asiago cheese to sesame. Top one off with cream cheese or make a sandwich out of it. They also sell croissants and muffins. The Bagel Table also serves lunch. I enjoy their Italian sandwich, which is stuffed full of meats and cheese. I also ordered a cup of their clam chowder with bagel croutons. This chowder was FANTASTIC, comparable to chowders found in Maine or on the Cape.

The Bagel Table also bakes up a variety of desserts like cupcake, cookies, and whoopie pies. They also sold pies for customers at Thanksgiving.

EAT UP ON THE ROAD: PHILLY'S FANTASTIC FOOD

Saturday, June 30, 2018
Cheesesteak Hoagie from Cleavers
Crabfries from Chickie's & Petes
Philadelphia is the home of American history, but this fantastic city also houses some fine food. The city is world famous for their mouth-watering cheesesteaks. There is so much buzz about Geno's and Pats, but the locals told Eat Up New England to check out Cleavers. Their "Cheesesteak Hoagie" is by far one of the best sandwiches I have ever tasted. It is loaded with steak and melted cheese. Underneath it all is lettuce, tomatoes, onions and mayo. All of it is piled into a sesame seed bun. This cheesesteak is as good as it gets.

Eat Up New England also made it to Citizens Bank Park for a Phillies game. So many people were eating crabfries, so I hunted them out. They come from the local chain, Chickie's & Pete's. These seasoned fries are so addictive, especially when you pair them with hot cheese sauce.

REIN'S DELI: A TASTE OF NYC IN CT

Friday, March 30, 2018
Ham & cheese sandwich
Vegetable chili
Pickles start off every meal!
Rein's has been in business since 1972.
Rein's Deli
Vernon, CT
www.reinsdeli.com

You don't have to drive all the way to New York City to find the perfect deli. Just head to Vernon, Connecticut for a meal at Rein's Deli.

This restaurant is massive. If you go for breakfast or lunch on the weekend, don't get turned off by the line. It goes fast and there's plenty of room for everyone. Once you sit down, it's time to conquer Rein's menu. There are hundreds and hundreds of dishes. For breakfast there are omelets, egg sandwiches, French toast on challah bread, pancakes, bagels, cheese blintzes, sour cream coffee cake. You want it? Rein's has it.

For lunch, Rein's has so many soups that they publish a soup schedule on their website! Rein's makes ever sandwich under the sun from peanut butter & jelly to their famous pastrami sandwich. I ordered their fantastic ham & cheese sandwich. The ham and cheese were piled high and the bread was perfectly soft. Rein's also has a huge dessert menu with lemon meringue pie, cheesecake, apple pie and a warm noodle pudding made with egg noodles, sour cream, cottage cheese and raisins.

Rein's Deli's open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. On Fridays and Saturdays, they don't close until midnight. They have a full bakery and deli, along with a refrigerated section allowing customers to take home their flavorful foods.

HUGE, TASTY SANDWICHES AT ZOEY'S DELI IN VERMONT

Friday, November 11, 2016

Vermont is known for its hearty, local food. One place where you'll find plenty of that is Zoey's Deli in Manchester, Vermont. It's been a favorite since 1991.

Zoey's specializes in huge sandwiches on homemade bread. I ordered the Granny Smith with ham, apples, cheddar and honey mustard. It's served with their homemade potato chips. This was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. It was so fresh and full of flavor. The bread added so much to the sandwich. It tasted like it just came out of the oven, which it probably did. They have several different breads to choose from including country white, whole wheat, marbled rye and multigrain.

Other sandwiches include the Buffalo Bill, with buffalo chicken, lettuce, tomato, bacon and ranch dressing. They have a long list of sandwiches that they specialize in or you can make your own. Zoey's also has several salads including classics like Greek, garden and Caesar to fun salads like a pineapple chicken and a Super 7 Salad with spinach, chicken, cheddar, craisins, pineapple, mandarin oranges and walnuts. For dessert, try one of their massive cookies.

WHICH WICH SANDWICH CHAIN COMES TO MASSACHUSETTS

Sunday, November 06, 2016
Look out Subway. You have more competition in Massachusetts. The very first Which Wich sandwich shop has opened in Westwood at University Station. This chain opened its first shop in Dallas in 2003 and is now spreading across the country and the world. They have sandwich shops in Panama, Mexico and Dubai.

What makes Which Wich different from all of the other chains, is that customers write up their own orders. You pick a bag and write out exactly what you want on your sandwich, from size to toppings. Right now, they have a Philly cheesesteak special going on. There's the "Authentic Philly" with provolone and the "South Philly" with Cheeze Whiz. I enjoyed my "Authentic Philly." I'd also recommend their house chips, which are a peppery complement to their sandwiches.

Their signature sandwich is "The Wicked." It's stuffed with five meats and three cheeses. Which Wich made headlines in 2010 when a customer from Atlanta dislocated his jaw biting into one! Also on their menu, a sandwich called "The Hula," with ham and pineapple. They also have classic beef, turkey, tuna, chicken and Italian sandwiches that are fully customizable. Which Wich also sells milkshakes, cookies and ice cream sandwiches.

MOUTH-WATERING SUBS AT DIBELLA'S SUBS IN NEWINGTON, CT

Monday, July 04, 2016
Every sandwich shop has something about it that makes it stand out in the crowd. At DiBella's, it's their homemade bread, their hearty sandwiches and their old school sandwich shop ambience. DiBella's started out as a small corner grocery story in Rochester, New York nearly a century ago. Right now, they have 44 sub shops in six states. Eat Up New England checked out one of their newer shops in Newington, Connecticut.

I loved the decor, from their neon signs to their vintage lighting. They also have a huge dining room with plenty of room for families. DiBella's has a huge counter for ordering. You can watch them make your sub right in front of you. All subs come in small, medium and large. The DiBella's Cheesesteak above is a small and it was more than enough for lunch. I enjoyed it with provolone cheese, peppers and onions. Check out that bread! That's their everything bread. It's just like an everything bagel. DiBella's also has sesame, multigrain and plain breads. They make them all in house.

Some of their classic subs include the "Godfather," with genoa salami, capicola and ham. There's the "Uncle Louie" with roast beef, turkey and ham. You can even get a cheese sub with assorted cheeses.  Specialty subs include "The Cowboy," with bacon, BBQ sauce, chicken and cheddar cheese. There's also the "Buffalo Chicken," with grilled chicken smothered in Buffalo sauce, ranch or blue cheese and topped with melted cheese. Add a pickle, pasta or potato salad to any of their sandwiches. They also make chocolate chip cookies in house!

As of today, DiBella's is only in Connecticut. They have other locations in Milford, Hamden and Wallingford.

JERSEY MIKE'S SUBS

Sunday, April 10, 2016
I've seen Jersey Mike's Sub Shops on vacation and have always wanted to see what they're all about. I got my chance last week at Mohegan Sun. Who knew they had a shop right here in New England?

Jersey Mike's subs come in mini, regular and giant. Their bread is made fresh at all of their shops. Their sandwich meats and cheeses are cut right in front of you. A nice touch. I enjoyed a mini "The American Classic," a ham and provolone sub. They really piled on the ham, cheese and lettuce, so even though it was a mini, there was plenty to eat.

Other cold subs include an Italian, tuna, "Jersey Shore's Favorite" with provolone, ham and cappacuolo and a roast beef and provolone sub. They also server many hot subs including meatball & cheese, chicken parm and "Jersey Mike's Famous Philly." There are also several chicken cheese steaks on their menu along with many classic wraps like chicken Caesar, grilled veggie and a turkey wrap. They can also make any of their subs into a salad.

Check out Jersey Mike's in the Casino of the Sky at Mohegan Sun. They also have locations all over Massachusetts and North Providence and Warwick, Rhode Island.

1912 CAFE INSIDE L.L. BEAN'S FLAGSHIP STORE IN MAINE

Monday, February 22, 2016
The 1912 Cafe is a cozy spot for a quick meal inside of L.L. Bean's flagship store in Freeport, Maine. The 1912 Cafe specializes in healthy meals that are made in house with no artificial ingredients.

I recently stopped by for lunch and ordered their "Mainely Cuban" sandwich with a side of clam chowder. The chowder was think and hearty. The sandwich was stuffed with smoked ham, Swiss cheese and their amazing house pickles. The combination of flavors on that sandwich was so good! Those homemade pickles are amazing. They sell them by the jar to take home.

Their menu also features several wheat wraps and salads. Go healthy with their Mediterranean salad or their Nuts & Berries Salad. They also offer cheese and hummus plates, along with plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options. The 1912 Cafe is also open for breakfast from 9am- noon every day with a menu that features breakfast sandwiches and bagels

POTBELLY'S

Wednesday, July 22, 2015
Potbelly is one of eat Up New England's favorite national sandwich chains, discovered on a trip to Washington, D.C. several years ago. There are now several locations in Massachusetts including Boston, Burlington and Cambridge. EUNE's favorite sandwich to order is their "Pizza Sandwich." It's stuffed with meatballs, pepperoni, capicola, mushrooms, provolone cheese and marina sauce. It's soooo good warmed up. It really is like having a pizza in sandwich form. Try one along with one of their famous milkshakes that comes with a cookie on its straw.

GIGANTIC SALADS AT GREEN GODDESS CAFE IN STOWE, VT

Saturday, May 09, 2015
Stowe, Vermont is known for its breath-taking mountain views, skiing, fresh air and its fantastic local restaurants. So much of the food that you'll find in Stowe (and really much of Vermont) is local and farm to table. The Green Goddess Cafe is one place you'll find these healthy ingredients.

This cafe has a huge menu for breakfast and lunch. You'll find homemade muffins, pastries, pancakes, eggs and toast, scrambles and breakfast sandwiches among their breakfast offerings. There's also a full menu of raw juices and smoothies.

We went for lunch, so we were able to order one of their huge salad, which the Green Goddess Cafe is known for. All of their salads are served in large wooden bowls. There's plenty to share. You can choose from one of their salads off the menu, or make you're own. You can actually fill out of sheet with whatever ingredients you want! We also ordered a grilled cheese with cheddar, avocado, goat cheese and spinach. The buttery bread was the perfect compliment to this perfect sandwich. There are a bunch of other sandwiches on their menu, along with soups, wraps and paninis.

I had one of the best meals in Stowe at Green Goddess Cafe, so be sure to check them out!

CAREFULLY CRAFTED SANDWICHES AT NEWPORT'S ROSEMARY & THYME CAFE

Tuesday, April 28, 2015
Rosemary & Thyme Artisan Cafe is a hidden gem of Newport, Rhode Island. This cozy spot is tucked in, but just close enough to all of the hustle and bustle of Thames Street. For breakfast, choose from a variety of pastries (muffins, turnovers, bagels) and hot/iced coffees. The pastries go quick!

Rosemary & Thyme offers a variety of tasty sandwiches for lunch. I enjoyed "The Ultimate Grilled Cheese" with bacon, cheddar and caramelized onions on sour dough bread. It was very flavorful and filling. There are several pork sandwiches on the menu, along with the "Verona Chicken" which includes marinated grilled chicken, smoked bacon, caramelized onions and Gorgonzola cheese. There are several salads and flatbread pizzettes on the menu with funky toppings like sweet potato mash and even poached pears. Rosemary & Thyme has several vegetarian selections including a vegetarian grilled cheese with spinach, leeks and oven roasted tomatoes and a "Tuscan Sandwich" with mozzarella and tomatoes.

Rosemary & Thyme is open for breakfast and lunch. They have been voted "Best in Rhode Island" for "Best Sandwich & Grilled Cheese."

(Closed) BREAKFAST AT FIRST & LAST BAKERY CAFE

Monday, December 08, 2014
Spinach quiche with fruit

UPDATE: Sadly, First & Last bakery closed in 2020.

One of my favorite restaurants is the First & Last Tavern in Hartford, Connecticut. Across the street, you'll find their sister restaurant, First & Last Bakery Cafe. I've been here many times for lunch. They offer so may delicious sandwiches, but this weekend we stopped by for breakfast for the first time. We were wowed!

The Bakery is was packed with people on Saturday morning. We were lucky to find a table! I ordered the "morning scrambler," which is a scramble of eggs, cheese and sausage. It's served with roasted potatoes and a small muffin. It was so good and so filling! I also grabbed two cups of their peppermint stick coffee, which they are serving for the Christmas season. Delicious!

Other breakfast options include an omelet of the day, French toast and corned beef hash. Sides include bacon, fruit, hash and sausage patties. They also have a bunch of breakfast sandwiches including fried egg & cheese and bacon, egg and cheese. First & Last Bakery Cafe also has a huge display of pastries like croissants, muffins, sticky buns and cookies.

We've been looking for a new breakfast place since Mortensen's closed last Christmas and now we've found one!
