BBQ AT ITS BEST AT BISON COUNTY IN WALTHAM
Monday, April 03, 2017
Every meal at Bison County starts off with a big slice of corn bread and butter. We ordered some hush puppies with honey dipping sauce and fried pickles with ranch to kick off our meal. Other apps include chili cheese fries, grilled fire shrimp, catfish nuggets and a couple of chili's.
Eat Up New England had a tough time settling on dinner because of Bison County's extensive menu. There are quesadillas, salads, wings, burgers and ribs. Wanting to sample their food, I ordered their 1/2 chicken and 1/2 pulled pork plate. It comes with two sides, so I got the jalapeno rice and sauteed vegetables. So tasty. I haven't been so full in a long time.

SOUTHERN IN SOMERVILLE AT THE SOUTHERN KIN COOKHOUSE
Friday, January 13, 2017
Chicken & waffles
Pimento cheese fritters
Farmhouse buttermilk biscuits
The Cookhouse offers an impressive selection of whiskey and cocktails. I sipped on a couple of "Southern Prides" throughout the meal. This drink is made of Henry McKenna bourbon, allspice, apple cordial and lemon.
We started things off with some of their mouth-watering apps. Their pimento cheese fritters are amazing, as are their buttermilk biscuits. The biscuits are served with jam and an incredible honey butter. Other apps include fried okra, crab soup, "Redneck Nachos" with spiced pork rinds and cheddar grits and the "Hog 'n Hooch Biscuit," a pork belly with fried green tomatoes.
Deciding on an entree was tough. The Cookhouse's menu is packed with all of the classics including shrimp 'n grits, bourbon brined chicken, Kansas City ribs and "Mississippi Spotted Cat," which is a buttermilk fried catfish. I settled upon one of my favorites, the chicken 'n waffles. It was so tasty and filling.
Good luck saving room for dessert, but they do have several pies included key lime, mud pie, buttermilk pie and Georgia's Peach Crumble Pie. You can also top of your slice with some of Bart's Homemade ice cream, which is made in Greenfield. Flavors include malted vanilla, maple cream, sea salt caramel swirl and mud pie.
If you're a fan of southern food, you've got to check out Southern Kin Cookhouse. The meal was perfect from start to finish.

ON THE ROAD: SWEET GEORGIA'S JUKE JOINT
Saturday, March 26, 2016
One of my favorite things about traveling is trying the local cuisine. Southern food is one of my favorites, so I couldn't leave Atlanta recently without getting a real southern meal. I found the perfect one at Sweet Georgia's Juke Joint. This place has a laid back atmosphere complete with live jazz music. One of its customers told us he travels from across town for their fried chicken, so we were in for a treat!
They specialize in homemade moonshine, so ordered some. The moonshine had raspberries and pineapple. It was amazing! For dinner, I got the "Juke Joint Fried Chicken," which comes with two of their sides. The sides include garlic steamed broccoli, steak fries, fried green tomatoes, okra, sweet potato fries, cheese grits and mac & cheese. I settled on the mac & cheese and collard greens. The food was brought to us in no time. I quickly realized this was one of the best meals I've ever eaten. The batter on the chicken was phenomenal. The mac & cheese was out of the world. I also tried some of my friend's waffle, which was so good.
Sweet Georgia's has all of the southern favorites like shrimp & grits, fried catfish, peach glazed Alaskan salmon, grilled rib eye, jambalaya pasta and a St. Louis rib rack. They all serve several vegetarian dishes including salads. Desserts include peach cobbler, banana pudding, spiced apple bread pudding and pecan pie.
If you're ever in downtown Atlanta, be sure to check out Sweet Georgia's. The food is incredible!

ON THE ROAD: LADY & SON'S IN SAVANNAH, GEORGIA
Sunday, October 25, 2015
Southern food is as good as it gets. It's filling, delicious, packed with calories and made with love. I was recently in Savannah, Georgia where I checked out Paula Deen's restaurant, The Lady & Sons.
There are three floors to accommodate all of the tourists who stop by. Each floor has a buffet packed with all of the fixins, along with a cook who makes cornbread and cheddar biscuits. Those come with every meal and are soooo good! I was excited to see pumpkin beer on the menu, so I ordered a tall glass to wash down the bread 'n biscuits. Apps include southern favorites like fried green tomatoes and fried okra. We loved the tomatoes.
Entrees include chicken pot pie, salmon, shrimp 'n grits, crab cakes, New York Strimp and choice of fresh seafood. I enjoyed the chicken pot pie, which was a work of art. Check out the latticework on that crust! Desserts include pie pie and key lime pie. Eat Up NE was too stuffed to indulge.
If you're ever in Savannah, make reservations. The Lady & Sons gets busy for lunch and dinner. While you're waiting, you can always check out Paula Deen's store. It sells everything from Paula's cookbooks and candles to flavored chap sticks and shirts.
