SEVERAL UNO PIZZERIA AND GRILLE RESTAURANTS CLOSE

Wednesday, October 09, 2024

This Uno in Bellingham, MA is still open.

If you haven't been to Uno Pizzeria and Grille in awhile, now would be a great time to give them your business. The local chain best known for its Chicago-style deep dish pizza has closed a bunch of locations - places that were open for decades. Their Wrentham location that's in Wrentham Village is now closed. Their Framingham location also shuttered recently. Restaurants in Leominster, Millbury and Westborough locations also shut down this year, along with one in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Only 7 locations remain in Massachusetts according to their website.

It's sad to see what's happening to this longtime local chain. Inflation continues to wage war on the restaurant industry, along with skyrocketing leases and post-Covid recovery. People just can't afford to go out as much as they used to.

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the summer. There's no better way to welcome the season than with some fresh seafood. Blount Clam Shack has a restaurant and market in Warren, Rhode Island. They also operate a food truck that shows up at events during the summer. Eat Up New England was excited to find the truck at the Memorial Day parade in Blackstone, Massachusetts. My kids and I enjoyed their clam cakes and New England clam chowder. There's also a lobster roll, grilled shrimp,  fish and chips and some lobster nachos, which look amazing.

The food truck is set to stop at Wright's Dairy Farm many times this summer, along with many other places. Check out their website to see where you can find it.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas: The Musical is back at PPAC this Christmas and it's a must-see for children and adults. After enjoying the Dr. Seuss Christmas classic, I wanted a quick bite and found some AMAZING pizza slices at Sakis Pizza across the street. Sakis offers a variety of mouth-watering slices for hungry customers to choose from. I loved their meat lovers and chicken, broccoli & bacon slices. Choose your slice and they will warm it up for you. They are generous with the cheese and the toppings. Sakis customers can also enjoy full pizzas, along with salads, burgers, calzones, pasta and wraps.

PAPA JOE'S WRAP SHACK
Bristol, RI

If you're looking for a quick and tasty spot to grab lunch while enjoying the waterfront community of Bristol, Rhode Island than look no further than Papa Joe's Wrap Shack. Their menu features all kinds of hearty, unique wraps.

There are hot wraps like The Bristolian with fried calamari, hot pepper rings, mozzarella, mixed greens and garlic mayo. There's an Asian-inspired Kung Pao Chicken wrap and the Harley Quinn with shaved steak, peppers, rice and more. The Wrap Shack offers a bunch of cold wraps like Chicken Caesar, The Garden of Eden made with a veggie burger and the Pearzola with grilled pears. I tried their Lasagna grilled wrap which is stuffed with pasta, meatballs, Pomodoro sauce and mozzarella. It was very good and filling.

The Wrap Shack also serves pizza. Make your own, or try one of their specialty pizzas. They even have a lasagna pizza, along with a shrimp-topped pie called The Scampi.

There is also a kids menu with a Fluffinator wrap, a mac & cheese wrap and a chicken fingers wrap.

The Wrap Shack has been in business since 2002 and is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday.

GENEROUS PORTIONS OF COMFORT FOOD AT LUCKY DOG TAVERN IN NORTH SMITHFIELD, RI

Sunday, January 29, 2023
Lucky Dog Tavern in North Smithfield, RI

A sample of beer.

Eggplant parmigiana

Beef short rib & cheddar grilled cheese

Chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream

Lucky Dog Tavern
North Smithfield, RI

It's always a good sign to arrive at a restaurant you've never tried before and get a rave review from a long-time customer. As we were waiting for our table, one of Lucky Dog Tavern's loyal customers had just eaten and told us that it's one of her favorite spots and all of the food is fantastic. She was right.

Lucky Dog Tavern is nestled on the bottom floor of a two-story home in North Smithfield. It is small, but the food is mighty good. My wife and I enjoyed the perfect meal from start to finish. Our waitress, Raelynn, was as good as it gets. She was highly knowledgeable of everything on the menu, went out of her way to check in on us and make recommendations. When I wasn't sure which beer I wanted to try, she brought over a sample.

The menu is full of comfort food favorites including apps like stuffed mushrooms, Tavern poutine, lobster poutine and calamari. Warm up with some French onion soup or lobster bisque.

Entrees include flappers aka wings, quesadillas, burgers, pastas, sandwiches, chicken, veal,  and seafood dishes. Lucky Dog also serves up steak tips, a sirloin strip and plenty of hearty daily specials. I ordered one of their gourmet grilled cheeses, the beef short rib and cheddar grilled cheese, which was fantastic. My wife enjoyed the large plate of eggplant parm, and there was plenty to bring home.

Since the meal was so good, we had to order dessert. We loved the molten chocolate lava cake, which comes with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. You would never know it's gluten free. There's also a house-made bread pudding for dessert that looks amazing.

Lucky Dog Tavern is one of the best restaurants I've been to in a long time, but make a reservation because it gets busy especially on weekends.

A COZY CHRISTMASTIME VISIT TO THE BRICK ALLEY PUB & RESTAURANT IN NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

Tuesday, December 13, 2022

The halls are decked at the Brick Alley Pub.

Check out their salad bar!

Clam chowder

Fish and chips

The Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant
Newport, RI

It's always a good time to visit Newport, RI, but it's extra special at Christmas time. The shops are all decorated, there are Christmas trees everywhere and the restaurants are buzzing.

The Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant on busy Thames Street has been a favorite for locals and visitors for 40 years. Their menu is packed full of comfort foods and seafood favorites. I enjoyed their fish and chips with a cup of clam chowder. The Rhode Island-style breading on the fish is fantastic and really brings out the taste of the fish. Other seafood dishes include classic baked scallops, lemony scallops piccata and baked stuffed shrimp.

There are a number of apps to kick off your meal like calamari, ahi tuna sliders and spinach and artichoke dip. There are also a bunch of "Famous Nacho Platters" to choose from like their cheese nachos, chicken nachos and Texas Chili Nacho Platter. Entrees include several salads, steaks, burgers, and pub style pizzas. The Italian in me would love to try one of their pastas one of these days. There's lobster mac & cheese, chicken piccata, chicken parm, spice buffalo pasta and more.

One thing I really enjoy about the Brick Alley Pub is their fresh salad bar. You don't see salad bars that much anymore, especially in the wake of Covid, so it's wonderful that they have one. Fill up a plate and grab a soup along with your entree or as a meal in itself.

Brick Alley Pub has a full bar with plenty of beer on tap, along with an extensive wine list. There are margaritas, sangrias, a bunch of house specialty drinks and even frozen and warm libations. They say their warm Irish Coffee is the best and sounds like it would be a tasty sip on a chilly winter day.

Brick Alley Pub and Restaurant has it all. A variety of fantastic food and drinks, along with that salad bar. The service is also excellent. Our server forgot to include cheese on my wife's veggie burger, so when she ordered a hot cocoa, it was on the house!

HUGE SLICES AT ANTONIO'S PIZZA BY THE SLICE

Sunday, February 24, 2019
Large pizzas are lined up with an array of toppings.
Ground beef roni and mushroom slices
Antonio's in Providence
Antonio's: Pizza By The Slice
Providence, Rhode Island
www.antoniospizza.com

Antonio's is one of the many wonderful restaurants on bustling Thayer Street in Providence, Rhode Island. They specialize in pizza by the slice. At any given time, there are dozens of large slices with different toppings available.

There are classics like mushroom, Hawaiian, and sausage. They kick things up a notch with slices with several toppings like beef taco, potato bacon and ground beef roni. Antonio's bakes more than a dozen chicken pizzas like chicken parm, chicken, bacon & ranch, BBQ chicken & pineapple and BBQ chicken & tortellini. There are also many vegetarian pizzas like eggplant & peppers, tomato and artichoke pesto. Antonio's also offers Sicilian slices and full pizzas.

The selection of toppings at Antonio's is really something. It rivals any NYC pizza shop. By the way, if you want anything besides pizza, TOO BAD. It's all pizza, all of the time here. Why mess with perfection?

Can't sleep? Order some warm cookies! Insomnia Cookies delivers cookies until three in the morning every day. Their location on busy Thayer Street in Providence, Rhode Island also stays open until 2 am.

These are some tasty cookies. There are traditional cookies like chocolate chunk, peanut butter cup, M&M's, snickerdoodle and double chocolate mint. They also have their own tasty batches of deluxe cookies like chocolate peanut butter cup and s'mores.  I loved their chocolate peanut butter cup cookie. It's a peanut butter cookie with peanut butter cups in it. It's served warm with ooey gooey warm peanut butter cup chunks in it.

Order one or a couple cookies or box them up to share. They have deals like the Six Pack, which includes 6 cookies. There's a Major Rager, which includes 18 traditional cookies. Or go nuts with The Insomniac, which is made up of 24 traditional cookies.

Many of their locations, including this one, also serve ice cream. Customers can buy ice cream cookie sandwiches using any of their cookies. They also have cookie cakes, which serve four to eight people.

THE BIG E: A NEW ENGLAND FALL TRADITION

Wednesday, September 27, 2017
Pierogies stuffed with cheese and keilbasa
Draft beer from the Vermont Statehouse
Vermont's Cold Hollow Cider Mill
Vegetable Tempura
Del's Lemonade in the Rhode Island Statehouse
Turkey Legs - A Big E Favorite!
Lobster Roll from the Maine Statehouse

Baked potato from the Connecticut Statehouse
THE BIG E
www.thebige.com
The end of summer is more tolerable for New Englanders every September because we have The Big E! The annual festival in West Springfield, Massachusetts attracts countless vendors and visitors every year. There's a live camel show. There are HUGE pumpkins, gourds that are more than one-thousand pounds. There are carnival rides and endless things for sale. If you're patient enough, you can even see some baby chicks hatch. The main attraction for Eat Up New England and so many others is, of course, THE FOOD.

If you like fried food, you're in lucky, because EVERYTHING is fried at The Big E. There are fried Oreos, fried vegetables, fried jelly beans, and even fried butter! I enjoyed some of the vegetable tempura from one of the vendors. We got a mountain of mixed veggies and ranch dipping sauce for under $10.

The New England statehouse replicas are one of my favorite parts of The Big E. They are models of each state's original statehouse and inside there are foods and items for sale from each state. Eat Up New England started off at the Rhode Island Statehouse, where I sipped on some cold Del's Lemonade. I enjoyed some craft beer in Vermont, a lobster roll in Maine and an incredibly satisfying baked potato at the Connecticut Statehouse.

There are so many drinks, alcoholic and non, at The Big E. The wonderful thing is, you can carry your beer or cocktail around all over the fair.  The New England Craft Beer Pub is one of my favorites, selling New England beers like Shipyard Pumpkinhead (with a cinnamon rim) and Vermont's Woodchuck Fall Cider. I LOVED their Blueberry Pie concoction of Sea Dog Blue Paw, pie syrup and a caramel cinnamon sugar rim.

NACHO MAMMA'S IN BRISTOL, RI IS NO JOKE!

Monday, July 17, 2017
Mamma's Sangria
Chorizo quesadilla
Inside Nacho Mamma's
Nacho Mamma's
www.nachomammasbristolri.com

Its name sounds like a Yo Mama joke, but when it comes to food, there's nothing laughable about Nacho Mamma's in Bristol Rhode, Island. Since 2010, Nacho Mamma's has brought Mexican flavor to this picturesque ocean-side town that is known for its seafood.

Sweet plantains, yuca sticks, chips & salsa and their Famous Wings are just some of their appetizers. Nacho Mamma's also serves heaping portions of nachos topped off with chili, chicken, pork, ground beef, flank steak or grilled shrimp. They also have BBQ Pork Nachos, which are topped with cheese, scallions, red onion, black olives, jalepenos and drizzled with avocado ranch.

Entrees include Mexican favorites like burritos, chimichangas, enchiladas, tacos and quesadillas. I LOVED Nacho Mamma's chorizo quesadilla. The flavor of the meat was so good and this sucker was stuffed full of cheese. It was so big and filling that I took half of the meal home.

Signature meals include a Portuguese Burrito (flank steak, fries, cheese, rice, two eggs, Portuguese hot pepper & sour cream) and a Fried Chicken Quesadilla (fried, chicken, bacon, cheese and BBQ-Ranch drizzle). Nacho Mamma's also serves up salads, fried yuca bowls, burgers and even a taco pizza. This is also the home of "The Big Burrito Challenge," where they dare customers to eat a 5-pound burrito in just 30 minutes.

Nacho Mamma's has its liquor license! In the spring and summer, they serve up a wonderfully refreshing sangria. Don't let that red Solo cup fool you. This drink is all class.

LOBSTER SEASON BEGINS AT DEAD EYE DICK'S ON BLOCK ISLAND

Monday, May 29, 2017
Summer is unofficially here and that means it's time to kick of lobster season here in New England. I devoured my first lobster roll of the season this weekend at Dead Eye Dick's on Block Island. It comes hot or cold, but I prefer it hot with plenty of melted butter for dunking. As you can see, the chucks of lobster meat are huge. The ocean views at this Eat Up New England Sizzlin Summer Spot are breathtaking, so try to eat outside.

Dead Eye Dick's just opened for the season this past Tuesday. Learn all about them by checking out Eat Up New England's archives. I posted about them in May 2014.

NOSTALIGIA OVERLOAD AT THE ICONIC NEWPORT CREAMERY

Monday, May 01, 2017
Vermonster Waffled Grilled Cheese
Super Crunchy Grilled Cheese

Newport Creamery is a New England food icon. I had not visited in a long time, until this weekend.

There was a Newport Creamery in Mansfield, Massachusetts when I was a child. It was just about 10 minutes from home, so my parents often brought us there for an Awful Awful and a grilled cheese sandwich. The Mansfield location closed long ago, replaced by a Bertucci's, but Newport Creamery and its classic comfort food lives on in Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts.

This weekend my wife and I visited their locations in Middletown and Newport, Rhode Island. Saturday night, we pulled up to their ice cream window in Middletown. We ordered a vanilla Awful Awful. For readers who don't know, an Awful Awful is similar to a milkshake. It's made with ice cream, ice milk and syrup. Everything, the taste, right down to the Awful Awful logo on the cup, brought me back to childhood.

On Sunday, we enjoyed lunch at their Newport location. They still have an ice cream counter, just like way back when. It's wonderful how some things just freeze in time. We sat down in their dining room and ordered some of their "Good Mood Food." I marveled at some of the new items on their menu, like the Super Crunchy Grilled Cheese, a grilled cheese stuffed with mozzarella sticks. They also specialize in Waffled Grilled Cheeses. They put the bread on a waffle iron and it even tastes like maple syrup. I loved their Vermonster Waffled Grilled Cheese. It's stuffed with bacon and caramelized onions.

Two grilled cheeses with side salads for around $15. Newport Creamery is big on quality and value even after all of this time. I don't know why there were so many years in between my Newport Creamery Visits. Time has a way of melting away. But I know one thing, I'll be back soon.

BEER BREWED IN HOUSE AND EXCELLENT BAR FOOD AT TRINITY BREWHOUSE IN PROVIDENCE

Saturday, February 04, 2017
Trinity Brewhouse is a legendary brew pub restaurant in the heart of Providence, Rhode Island. Since 1995, their brewmasters have been making beer in house and they have won countless awards to back up just how fresh and how good their beer is.

The beers on top change every night, but last night I was excited to try their Black Hops. This double black IPA is an interesting concoction that looks like a stout. It's also 8.8% alcohol and is just $6 a pint. Other beers include a Russian Imperial Stout called Darkness and their signature Kolsch beer, with a pale golden color and light body. Trinity also sells big old growlers of beer to take home.

Trinity offers a traditional bar food menu to go along with their beers. Start off with Trinity nachos, chips & salsa, chili or chicken wings. For dinner, I would highly recommend one of their burgers. Choose from 6 or 10 ounce and top it with whatever you want. I enjoyed a 10 ounce with Vermont cheddar cheese, bacon and stout caramelized onions. It was perfectly cooked and served with a pile of their homemade fries. Other entrees include a New England clam roast, steak tips, fish & chips, lobster mac & cheese, pulled pork BBQ, jerk chicken and 12-inch rustic pizzas. Trinity even has a vegan ravioli for our vegan/vegetarian friends.

Trinity Brewhouse was an excellent dining experience from start to finish. Check them out online and social media for a look at what beers they have on tap before you visit.

COMFORT FOOD AT PUBLIC KITCHEN & BAR IN PROVIDENCE

Sunday, October 04, 2015

It was cold and rainy when Eat Up NE visited Public Kitchen & Bar in Providence, Rhode Island. The perfect kind of weather for their menu that is full of comfort foods.

Start out lunch or dinner with one of their small plates. Choose from cauliflower steak, fire roasted chicken wings, spicy tai noodles or go for their hummus 'n house pita like we did.

For lunch, there are pizzas like their Sriracha buffalo chicken or fig 'n prosciutto. There are also beef & lamb burgers, truffled mac & cheese, PEI mussels, a lobster roll and chicken salad. I LOVED their avocado club sandwich. It's made of warm chicken, bacon jam, avocado, lettuce and tomato all nestled in some toasted wheat bread. It also comes with their parmesan fries. The perfect lunch.

Stop by for dinner for steaks, seafood stew, swordfish, lobster ravioli, vegetable cavatelli and chicken. Public Kitchen also serves breakfast with several benedicts and omelets on the menu, along with pancakes, Belgian waffles and French toast.

Public Kitchen & Bar is just steps away from Providence Place Mall, inside of the Renaissance Hotel.
