RESTAURANT WEEK WITH A VIEW AT BISTRO 1828 IN KITTERY

Wednesday, April 16, 2025

The view of the water and a lighthouse from our table.

Roasted Leek & Fennel Bisque

Polenta Fries

Halibut Cake

Chocolate Lava Cake and Lemon Creme Brulee
Bistro 1828
Kittery, Maine

It was a snowy Saturday in April when we stopped by Bistro 1828 in Kittery, Maine. Finding this delightful restaurant on the water took our minds off of spring not being spring.

My wife and I were seated on the third floor, known as The Ski Club. It has its own little bar and the food is delivered from the floor below on a food elevator. The highlight is the view. We got the best table in the house overlooking the water and two lighthouses.

We were lucky enough to visit during restaurant week, so we were each able to try an appetizer, main course and dessert for $32 each. The polenta fries with feta were amazingly good and the roasted leek & fennel bisque was the perfect warm up on a chilly day. I enjoyed the halibut with fries for the main course. For dessert, it was chocolate lava cake and lemon creme brulee, which were the perfect end to a delicious meal.

BUSTER IS BACK IN WORCESTER!

Thursday, July 11, 2024

Buster is back!

A summertime tradition is back in the city of Worcester. Each July, The Sole Proprietor puts this massive crab on top of the restaurant. It almost looks like Halloween has come early, but this is Buster the crab and each year he ushers in his own special crab menu. The Buster menu includes apps like crab rangoon and oven toasted crab cakes. Buster's entrees include king crab ravioli, crab stuffed haddock and king crab legs. Enjoy Buster and his specials though the end of July.

KICKING OFF SUMMER AT THE BLOUNT CLAM SHACK FOOD TRUCK

Monday, May 27, 2024

Blount Clam Shack Food Truck

Clam Cakes and New England Clam Chowder

Blount Clam Shack

www.blountretail.com

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the summer. There's no better way to welcome the season than with some fresh seafood. Blount Clam Shack has a restaurant and market in Warren, Rhode Island. They also operate a food truck that shows up at events during the summer. Eat Up New England was excited to find the truck at the Memorial Day parade in Blackstone, Massachusetts. My kids and I enjoyed their clam cakes and New England clam chowder. There's also a lobster roll, grilled shrimp,  fish and chips and some lobster nachos, which look amazing.

The food truck is set to stop at Wright's Dairy Farm many times this summer, along with many other places. Check out their website to see where you can find it.

A TASTE OF SUMMER IN THE WINTER AT STOMPING GROUNDS GRILLE ON THE CAPE

Thursday, January 18, 2024

A summery cocktail.

The cozy dining room.

Stomping Grounds Grille
Buzzards Bay

It's been freezing cold. We've had some snow. Sometimes, you just have to get away from old man winter to get taste of the summer. That's just what I did when I took a day trip to the Cape. I collected some shells at Scusset Beach and got in some steps by the Sagamore Bridge. Then, it was time for lunch.

So many restaurants are closed for the season this time of the year, but I was able to enjoy a bite at Stomping Grounds Grille in Buzzards Bay. I was delighted to see a lobster roll on the menu, so I enjoyed one along with one of their summery cocktails. Their lunch menu offers light fare such as salads, which they will top with lobster, cajun shrimp, chicken salad and more. Other sandwiches include a curry chicken salad wrap, pulled pork and reuben.

Hearty Cape Cod classics fill their dinner menu. Choose from scallop and bacon casserole, lemon caper cod, Buzzards Bay casserole and a maritime mediterranean stew, among other meals. Stomping Grounds also offers plenty of bottles and cans of beer, including local favorites like Cape Cod Beer. There are also a number of cocktails. All of them are named after songs, which goes along with the musical theme of the restaurant.

CAPE COD SEAFOOD WITH A VIEW AT SESUIT HARBOR CAFE

Friday, June 30, 2023

Place your order at Sesuit Harbor Cafe

Lobster Caesar Salad

What a view!

Dine outside by the water.

Sesuit Harbor Cafe
Dennis, MA

Summer is officially here, and that means it's time for sun and seafood. Customers can enjoy both at Sesuit Harbor Cafe in Dennis. This little seafood shack is right on the water and the view is spectacular. Breathe in the salty air, watch seagulls fly by and boats on the water as you eat.

The seafood at Sesuit Harbor Cafe is top notch. I loved their Caesar salad with lobster, which comes with plenty of fresh and meaty lobster. Their menu is filled with seafood favorites like whole belly clams, fish and chips and a fisherman's platter. Get fancy with entrees like boiled lobster, baked stuffed scrod, marinated swordfish tips and seared salmon. Don't forget the fries and onion rings. A Cape Cod meal wouldn't be complete without New England Clam Chowder, which they have, along with lobster bisque.

There are also some options for vegetarians like the Joe-B, which is tomato and mozzarella on a grilled bun with a side of balsamic. Kids options include chicken fingers, hot dogs and grilled cheese.

The Sesuit Harbor Cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but is CASH only.

A COZY CHRISTMASTIME VISIT TO THE BRICK ALLEY PUB & RESTAURANT IN NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

Tuesday, December 13, 2022

The halls are decked at the Brick Alley Pub.

Check out their salad bar!

Clam chowder

Fish and chips

The Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant
Newport, RI

It's always a good time to visit Newport, RI, but it's extra special at Christmas time. The shops are all decorated, there are Christmas trees everywhere and the restaurants are buzzing.

The Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant on busy Thames Street has been a favorite for locals and visitors for 40 years. Their menu is packed full of comfort foods and seafood favorites. I enjoyed their fish and chips with a cup of clam chowder. The Rhode Island-style breading on the fish is fantastic and really brings out the taste of the fish. Other seafood dishes include classic baked scallops, lemony scallops piccata and baked stuffed shrimp.

There are a number of apps to kick off your meal like calamari, ahi tuna sliders and spinach and artichoke dip. There are also a bunch of "Famous Nacho Platters" to choose from like their cheese nachos, chicken nachos and Texas Chili Nacho Platter. Entrees include several salads, steaks, burgers, and pub style pizzas. The Italian in me would love to try one of their pastas one of these days. There's lobster mac & cheese, chicken piccata, chicken parm, spice buffalo pasta and more.

One thing I really enjoy about the Brick Alley Pub is their fresh salad bar. You don't see salad bars that much anymore, especially in the wake of Covid, so it's wonderful that they have one. Fill up a plate and grab a soup along with your entree or as a meal in itself.

Brick Alley Pub has a full bar with plenty of beer on tap, along with an extensive wine list. There are margaritas, sangrias, a bunch of house specialty drinks and even frozen and warm libations. They say their warm Irish Coffee is the best and sounds like it would be a tasty sip on a chilly winter day.

Brick Alley Pub and Restaurant has it all. A variety of fantastic food and drinks, along with that salad bar. The service is also excellent. Our server forgot to include cheese on my wife's veggie burger, so when she ordered a hot cocoa, it was on the house!

A TASTE OF SUMMER AT MORGAN'S HARBOR TO HILL

Monday, September 05, 2022

The Live lobster tank greets customers.

Seafood casserole

Morgan's Harbor to Hill looks like a Cape Cod shanty.

Scallops and fries
Morgan's Harbor To Hill
Hopkinton, MA

There's a new restaurant in Hopkinton and it's a good one! Morgan's Harbor to Hill is a seafood market and restaurant, something that is really needed in town. Bring a few live lobsters home, or raw scallops in bacon, mussels, clams, shrimp or lobster pie. Morgan's also sells salads, pasta salads, and fish meals for customers to bring home.

Morgan's Harbor To Hill also offers a full restaurant menu. I really liked their seafood casserole with haddock, shrimp and scallops topped with cracker crumbs. There are also pasta dishes like lobster mac and cheese shrimp scampi and steamed mussels over linguini. Their fried fished is air-fried, which makes a real difference in the taste. Their scallops and fries plate is fantastic. They also serve up cups, bowls, pints and quarts of clam chowder and lobster bisque. App include shrimp cocktail, stuffed clams and crab cakes. There are also a few dishes for those who don't like seafood like chicken fingers, mac & cheese and chicken parm.

LUNCH WITH A VIEW AT MARTINGALE WHARF IN PORTSMOUTH, NH

Sunday, May 23, 2021
Fire pit table with a view!

Crispy chicken club with fries
Martingale Wharf
Portsmouth, NH

Eat Up New England made a much-needed return to Portsmouth, New Hampshire after nearly two years. We were welcomed back by a sunny, summer-like day, the perfect weather to enjoy one of Portsmouth's restaurants on the water.

Martingale Wharf offers beautiful views of the water along with tranquil breezes. Eat outside if you can because you'll be treated to quite the seaside show. We saw some seagulls pecking away at some crabs they plucked right out of the water along with two large tugboats stopped traffic as a bridge opened up for them to pull through.

I enjoyed their Crispy Chicken Club for lunch. The chicken breast is served on a potato roll with bacon, lettuce, tomato and a cherry pepper aioli. The fries at Martingale are so good. Upgrade for the truffle fries. You won't be disappointed. Other entrees include a lobster croissant, grilled salmon, seafood scampi, and fried platters like fish & chips and whole belly clams. Martingale offers several large salads to choose from which look amazing judging from the photos they've posted on Instagram.  Apps include New England clam chowder, vegetable sushi, baked seafood dip, an artisan cheese board and mussels & fries. Martingale Wharf's bar is packed with beer, wine and there a bunch of ocean-inspired cocktails on their drink menu.

Right now, it would be wise to make reservations even for lunch. There were few tables available when we went on a Thursday afternoon.

There's nothing like sipping a cocktail by the water on a hot summer day. Poco's Bow Street Cantina in Portsmouth, New Hampshire offers plenty of outdoor seating on their waterfront deck for customers to do just that.

Poco's menu offers a mix of American and Mexican classics along with some New England seafood dishes. Be sure to order one of their massive margaritas. I loved their Classic Margarita, but customers can also build their own selecting their tequila, liqueur, mix and flavor. They also mix many of their own drinks like the fruity "Poco's Punch" and a refreshing "Limonada." Beer fans will enjoy a selection of bottles and rotating brews on tap. They also serve several wines and sangria, including PITCHERS of sangria.

Do yourself a favor and try their famous nachos. Choose from buffalo chicken, veggie and bbq pork nachos or their Bow Street nachos, which come with cheese and pico de gallo. All of the nachos come in half and full-size and are served with salsa and sour cream. The half is plenty for two people. Other apps include quesadillas, fajitas and enchiladas. Poco's also serves cups and bowls of seafood chowder, chili and several salads.

Entrees include pot roast, sweet potato mac & cheese, chicken and waffles and surf & turf. Poco's also serves many seafood dishes like lobster mac & cheese, New England broiled seafood (choose from haddock, shrimp and scallops) and fried seafood dishes. There's also a lobster roll, build your own burger and cauliflower burger. I devoured their fried haddock sandwich, which is served on a toasted bun with a pile of fries.

Poco's is a fun and tasty place to stop while taking in the sights and sounds of beautiful Portsmouth. Grab a drink and pull up a seat by the water while it's still warm out!

SIZZLIN' SUMMER SPOTS: THE KNACK

Monday, July 01, 2019
Lobster roll
Onion rings
The Knack in Orleans, Massachusetts
The Knack
Orleans, Massachusetts
theknackcapecod.com

The owners of The Knack say their goal is to perfect the Cape Cod roadside stand. Mission accomplished! They grew up on the Cape eating the lobster, the seafood and the burgers, so they know what they are doing.

The Knack is always hopping. In true Cape Cod fashion, customers order from one of their windows and eat outside. Start your meal with a shake, soda or a can of one of their local beers.  Burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches fill their menu. The burgers look amazing, but this time I wanted to sink my teeth into some Cape Cod lobster. The lobster was as fresh as can be. I gobbled it up with some of their onion rings, which are light and crispy. They also offer veggie tacos for vegetarians, along with fish and whole belly clam sandwiches.

Save room for dessert! There's soft serve ice cream and homemade ice cream sandwiches. The Knack donates 10% of their profits on sweets to charity everyday.

For decades, my family has always made reservations at The Old Grist Mill Tavern in Seekonk, Massachusetts for special occasions. Graduations. Anniversaries. Birthdays. Why do we keep coming back? The food is fantastic. The portions are perfect. There's a waterfall right outside, which makes for a super pleasant dining experience. And, of course, there's their salad bar. There aren't so many restaurants with salad bars anymore, but the Old Grist Mill Tavern has kept theirs going much to every diners delight.

Every meal begins with a basket of their fresh bread, which also includes their famous cinnamon bread and butter. The Tavern offers all kinds of fun cocktails. In the summer, I love their fishbowl.

The Tavern is known for its seafood and steak. For dinner, there are dishes like Baked Boston Scrod, Sea Scallops and Shrimp Scampi over Linguini. Diners can also order fresh lobsters of various sizes right out of the tank.  They also offer prime rib, sirloin, filet mignon and ribeye steak combos. Pair your meat with grilled salmon, baked stuffed shrimp, lobster saute or a steamed lobster

Every summer, Old Grist Mill tavern celebrates lobster with their Lobster Feast. There are steamed lobsters, a lobster roll, seafood pie, lobster scampi and lobster salads. There are also lobster inspired starts like lobster bisque, lobster spring rolls and lobster stuffed mushrooms. I ordered their lobster mac & cheese. This rich dish is made of bowtie pasta, chunks of fresh lobster meat and topped off with crumbled Ritz crackers.

I LOVE their clam strips plate. It comes with a pile of clam strips, crispy fries and cole slaw. I usually order a cup of their fantastic clam chowder to go with it. Other seafood dinners include fish & chips, oysters, scallops, calamari, shrimp and whole clams. The Lobster Pot also offers baked and boiled haddock, lobster and scallop dinners. Monday, January 16, 2017
Sure, it's the dead of winter here in New England, but it's still a good time to enjoy some lobster. This delightful lobster ale mac & cheese can be found at Tuscan Brick Oven Bistro in Freeport, Maine. The hearty dish is packed with fresh lobster meat and topped with cracker crumbs. Instead of the traditional elbow macaroni or penne, they use trumpet pasta, which is made in house. Be sure to save some bread for dipping up all of the leftover cheese sauce. It's made of red ale, gouda, fontina, parmigiana reggiano, pancetta and truffle oil. This lobster mac is the perfect hearty dish to fill you up on a cold winter night.

PERFECT HOT DOGS AT DOOGIE'S IN CONNECTICUT

Saturday, July 30, 2016
Bacon-cheeze and Coney Island dogs
Some of the finest hot dogs in all of New England are found inside an unassuming little shanty in Newington, Connecticut. Doogie's has lines out into their lobby at lunchtime. All you have to do is try it once and you'll understand why. Doogie's has been featured in food magazines, raved about on TV. The very afternoon we visited, Fox 61 in Connecticut profiled Doogie's on their afternoon news.

Doogie's has just about every topping imaginable for their hot dogs. They come in three different lengths: 10, 16 and a whopping 24 inches. They even have a challenge: eat two two-footers, fries and a drink in 20 minutes and they'll but your picture on the wall and give you a gift certificate.

Doogie's Dog include caramelized onions, kraut, chili, bacon-cheeze, chili-cheeze and a classic Coney Island dog with chili, onion mustard. I LOVED their 10-inch Coney Island dog and their 10-inch bacon-cheese dog. So much flavor. They are amazing.

Doogie's also has specialty dogs. There's the Tijuana with jalepenos and melted pepper jack cheese. There's the Dixie with BBQ pulled pork and homemade cole slaw. There's also the College special hot dog. It only comes 16 inches and it's topped with chili, cheeze, bacon, kraut, onions, jalapenos, melted cheese on a toasted garlic roll with surprises. I wonder what those surprises are?

They also serve cheese steaks, burgers and sandwiches. They have regular "fryz" and "curly fryz" which can be topped with cheeze, bacon-cheeze and chili-cheeze. Did I mention they also have a large seafood menu? My grandmother got the clam bellies. I snagged a few and they were pretty good. they also have lobster rolls in the afternoon. Shrimp, crab cakes and clam strips. There's also clam chowder and lobster bisque.

Doogie's is just phenomenal. It's a must-try for any hot dog lover.
