ENJOY THE KING OF CLUBS LOBSTER SANDWICH AT THE BRASS COMPASS

Tuesday, December 07, 2021

The King of Clubs

Delicious clam chowder

The Brass Compass Cafe
The Brass Compass Cafe
Rockland, Maine

Maine is known for its fresh lobster. One of the finest lobster sandwiches in all of Maine can be found at The Brass Compass Cafe in Rockland.

The King of Clubs is so good that it was declared the winner on Throwdown with Bobby Flay.  You'll need your appetite for this one. This thick, double decker sandwich is packed with fresh lobster meat, lettuce, tomato and crispy bacon. It is so amazingly good. Somehow, I still had room to enjoy a cup of their clam chowder with this monster of a sandwich.

The Brass Compass is open for breakfast and lunch. There's a lot to choose from for both meals. For breakfast, there are a number of omelets, benedicts and specials like The Zoe, which is a grilled biscuit topped with haddock cakes, poached eggs and hollandaise. They also serve the ever-so delicious biscuits with sausage gravy. For lunch, there are a bunch of seafood platter and rolls, along with many specialty salads like the surf & turf Caesar and a salmon Caesar. They also serve burgers, quesadillas and wraps.

The Brass Compass is located in downtown Rockland where are plenty of shops to check out. They also have outdoor dining during the warmer months.

A TASTE OF SUMMER AT THE SEAFOOD SHANTY

Friday, July 09, 2021

Lobster roll and fries

Order at the window and eat outside
The Seafood Shanty
Bournedale, Cape Cod

For years, I've passed by The Seafood Shanty on my way to cross over the Sagamore Bridge and have always thought about what it would be like to eat there. Last week, I finally stopped to check it out.

The Seafood Shanty is a classic Cape Cod seafood restaurant. You order at the window and wait for your number to be called. Enjoy your meal outside at one of their picnic tables with a view of the Cape Cod canal.

I LOVED their cold lobster roll with a side of fries. So fresh and a nice heaping portion of lobster. I will definitely be back for this! Other sandwiches include fried clam, scallop, and clam strip rolls. There are also burgers, hot dogs and sausages for land-lovers. If you have a big appetite, order one of their plates like fried clam bellies, fried clam strips, and fried scallops - all of them come with fries and cole slaw. For dessert, there's a homemade ice cream sandwich, hot fudge and strawberry sundaes and a brownie sundae.

The Seafood Shanty is cash only. They have an ATM, but it will charge you to withdraw cash.

One of the highlights of this summer has been the Cousins Maine Lobster pulling up at Weston Nurseries in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. The food truck became a national sensation on Shark Tank when its founders partnered with Barbara Corcoran. Now, Cousins Maine Lobster Trucks (and restaurants) can be found in cities around the country.

All of their food is phenomenal. Of course, there are traditional hot and cold lobster rolls. Those classics can be found everywhere, so I ordered some of the more exotic items. The lobster grilled cheese is fantastic. It's stuffed with cheddar and pepper jack cheeses. The lobster tots are also a favorite. The large portion of tots is topped with warm lobster, pico de gallo and a cilantro lime sauce. Cousins' soft lobster tacos are also a delight and are complimented with a cup of their clam chowder or lobster bisque. Cousins also offers a lobster quesadilla, shrimp tacos and a lobster tail and tots. There are kids meals and whoopie pies for dessert.

Check out their website and social media for where their trucks will appear next.

SIZZLIN' SUMMER SPOTS: THE KNACK

Monday, July 01, 2019
Lobster roll
Onion rings
The Knack in Orleans, Massachusetts
The Knack
Orleans, Massachusetts
theknackcapecod.com

The owners of The Knack say their goal is to perfect the Cape Cod roadside stand. Mission accomplished! They grew up on the Cape eating the lobster, the seafood and the burgers, so they know what they are doing.

The Knack is always hopping. In true Cape Cod fashion, customers order from one of their windows and eat outside. Start your meal with a shake, soda or a can of one of their local beers.  Burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches fill their menu. The burgers look amazing, but this time I wanted to sink my teeth into some Cape Cod lobster. The lobster was as fresh as can be. I gobbled it up with some of their onion rings, which are light and crispy. They also offer veggie tacos for vegetarians, along with fish and whole belly clam sandwiches.

Save room for dessert! There's soft serve ice cream and homemade ice cream sandwiches. The Knack donates 10% of their profits on sweets to charity everyday.

Lobster mac & cheese
Salmon with asparagus & risotto
Spinach-n-Artichoke dip
WOOD-N-TAP BAR & GRILL
Newington, CT (with several other CT locations)
www.woodntap.com

The Wood-N-Tap Bar and Grill is popping up all over Connecticut. With dishes like lobster mac & cheese and drinks like 90's Punch, that's something that Eat Up New England can certainly get behind!

I've stopped by there Newington location several times and am always delighted by the vast selection of options on their menu. Apps include a cheesy skillet of Spinach-n-Artichoke dip (pictured above) with tortilla chips, flatbreads, Sesame Ahi Tuna, Monster Nachos, Maine Crab Dip, Chicken Fingers and Fried Mozz.

The drink menu is quite impressive. Sure, there are plenty of beers and wines, but I enjoy their unique cocktails.  Their 90's Punch is a blend of vodka, Hub Punch and juice served in a drink pouch! It's one of their "OMG" options on their menu for creative food & drinks you're aren't going to find anywhere else. Wood-N-Tap also makes their own hard lemonades with flavors like blueberry, peach, raspberry, blackberry and strawberry.

Entrees run the gamut from pasta entrees like Blacked Chicken Pasta to pizzas like their Mac and Cheese Pizza, one of their "OMG" entrees.  There are also several salads like their Chop House Steak Salad, along with traditional sandwiches and wraps. Over the summer, Wood-N-Tap offered several lobster apps and entrees. I enjoyed their hearty portion of lobster mac & cheese. Their Atlantic Salmon entree is absolutely fantastic. The fish is served with a cheesy risotto and asparagus. Delicious.

Stop by Monday-Friday between 3-6pm and after 9pm for Tappy Hour. A selection of apps and drinks are served for cheap at their bar.

$9.99 FOR A LOBSTER ROLL PLATTER? YES, PLEASE!

Wednesday, May 30, 2018
A taste of summer in the city. Tonight, Uno's was offering lobster platters to their Insiders members for just $9.99. Needless to say, their Framingham location was jumping. That's a great price at any time, but with the sky high price of lobster meat this season, it's a STEAL. PLUS, it comes with clam chowder, fries and cider cole slaw. Uno's Insiders Club is one of the best restaurant programs. It's free to join and they hook up members with great deals like this one all of the time.

Tuesday, June 06, 2017
LOBSTER TOUR 2017
The weather may be AWFUL, but we can still think summer by indulging in one of New England's mouthwatering lobster dishes. Doogies & The Clam Digger in Newington, Connecticut is known for their amazing hot dogs, but this time of the year they also sell a tasty hot lobster roll. Eat Up New England stopped by this weekend and enjoyed the large chunks of fresh lobster meat in their roll. It's served with hot butter and a side of cole slaw - all for just $14.99.

LOBSTER SEASON BEGINS AT DEAD EYE DICK'S ON BLOCK ISLAND

Monday, May 29, 2017
Summer is unofficially here and that means it's time to kick of lobster season here in New England. I devoured my first lobster roll of the season this weekend at Dead Eye Dick's on Block Island. It comes hot or cold, but I prefer it hot with plenty of melted butter for dunking. As you can see, the chucks of lobster meat are huge. The ocean views at this Eat Up New England Sizzlin Summer Spot are breathtaking, so try to eat outside.

Dead Eye Dick's just opened for the season this past Tuesday. Learn all about them by checking out Eat Up New England's archives. I posted about them in May 2014.

DELICIOUS DISH: LOBSTER MAC & CHEESE AT TUSCAN BRICK OVEN BISTRO IN MAINE

Monday, January 16, 2017
Sure, it's the dead of winter here in New England, but it's still a good time to enjoy some lobster. This delightful lobster ale mac & cheese can be found at Tuscan Brick Oven Bistro in Freeport, Maine. The hearty dish is packed with fresh lobster meat and topped with cracker crumbs. Instead of the traditional elbow macaroni or penne, they use trumpet pasta, which is made in house. Be sure to save some bread for dipping up all of the leftover cheese sauce. It's made of red ale, gouda, fontina, parmigiana reggiano, pancetta and truffle oil. This lobster mac is the perfect hearty dish to fill you up on a cold winter night.

LOBSTER TOUR: LOBSTER MAC 'N CHEESE AT ROX DINER

Saturday, July 09, 2016
Sometimes the best advertising is free. This afternoon, Rox Diner in Newtonville, Massachusetts posted a photo of their lobster mac 'n cheese on Instagram. It made me crave it. So, as you can see, that's where I wound up for dinner. This very hearty bowl was just $12.95. Their Newtonville location is also offering a lobster roll, lobster reuben and a lobster cobb salad this summer. I may have to try them all!

UPDATE: This location of the Rox Diner has closed for good.

LOBSTER TOUR 2016: JAKE N JOES

Saturday, June 04, 2016
Eat Up New England's Lobster Tour 2016 rolls on. This week, I enjoyed a lobster roll at Jake N Joes in Norwood, Massachusetts. This cold lobster roll was surprisingly good from a place that specializes in bar food and beer. It was filled with large chunks of lobster meat and came with cole slaw and a pickle. You can choose from chips or fries, but I opted for the more health conscious Caesar salad. Jake N Joe's will have lobster rolls all summer long, so try one out at one of their Massachusetts locations.

IT'S LOBSTER ROLL SEASON!

Saturday, May 21, 2016
Summer is coming, so that means it's time for lobster! I enjoyed my first lobster roll of the season today at Solas in Boston. Solas is an Irish pub, but they make a delicious lobster roll that's served with a pile of french fries. BTW, I kept it Irish with a Guinness to wash it down. Happy summer and welcome to lobster season!

AN EPIC PRESENTATION OF LOBSTER MAC & CHEESE IN HILTON HEAD

Tuesday, November 24, 2015
Chances are, you've never seen lobster mac & cheese presented like this! I recently enjoyed this dish at a restaurant called Frankie Bones in Hilton Head, South Carolina. How cool is that presentation?! Not only did it look amazing, it tasted wonderful, with lots of chunks of fresh lobster meat.

LOBSTER TOUR: ROBERT'S MAINE GRILL

Sunday, August 23, 2015
Lobster is one of the many things Maine is known for. Yesterday, I enjoyed a lobster roll at Eat Up New England favorite Robert's Maine Grille in Kittery, Maine. They'll prepare your roll warm with butter or cold with mayo. I went for warm. There really is such a difference in taste when you have lobster right by the ocean. Robert's lobster rolls come in regular and jumbo sizes. The one above is regular and was plenty, especially since a paired it up with some clam chowder. Their regular lobster and chowder special is $25. The jumbo special is $30.

Robert's really is the place to go for lobster. There's a tank full of live lobsters on the left when you walk in. They'll steam one up or top off a cobb salad with lobster meat. Customers can even order a clambake for two which comes with a lobster.

Robert's is open year round, so you can enjoy a lobster even in the middle of the winter!

LOBSTER BURGER NOW AT SHAKE SHACK!

Tuesday, August 18, 2015
Eat Up New England's lobster tour continues at an unlikely place: Shake Shack. The burger joint is now serving this Surf N' Shack burger at all of its New England locations. It's topped with lobster. I ordered one at their Dedham, Massachusetts location today. It's delicious. Of course, Shake Shack could top their burgers with just about anything and it would still be good. These special burgers are $8.99 and will be available through September 20.

LOBSTER TOUR: LOBSTER SLIDERS AT COOK

Wednesday, July 29, 2015
The weather is hot and humid. Cool off by having these lobster sliders at Cook in Newton, Massachusetts. The cold lobster salad is nestled between two rolls. It's served with a mesclun salad and homemade potato chips. Eat Up New England recommends a Clown Shoes Clementine beer to go along with it.

LOBSTER TOUR: BARLOW'S CLAM SHACK

Sunday, July 12, 2015
Eat Up New England's Lobster Tour stops by Barlow's Clam Shack in Buzzards Bay. This old-fashioned clam shack is located right across from the Cape Cod Canal. Signs posted read, "Wicked Good Lobster Rolls," so EUNE decided to give one a try. Their lobster rolls come with large pieces of lobster meat and a generous portion of fries. It was wicked good and you can't beat the price - just $13.99. You can eat your roll inside, outside on their patio or do what EUNE did and take it across the street and enjoy it by the water.

LOBSTER TOUR 2015: THE TAP

Sunday, June 14, 2015

It's been a couple of weeks since I enjoyed a lobster roll, so last night, I was off to The Tap Trailhouse in Boston. This restaurant is near all of the pubs by Faneuil Hall and offers classic American and New England fare.

This place wouldn't be called The Tap if it didn't have a full menu of alcohol. There are several beers on tap, bottles and cans of beer (including my season favorite Dell's Lemonade beer by Narragansett), wines, gins and mixed drinks. I wanted a sangria since it was so hot out. Would you believe they don't have sangria?!?! Ouch. I ordered a "Cobbler" (Oloroso Sherry, Crème de Cassis, Cinnamon, Seasonal Fruit) instead. It wasn't much like a sangria at all, but was still refreshing.

I enjoyed a kettle of clam chowder for an app. It's served in a little cauldron that's piping hot. My fiancée enjoyed their homemade pretzel sticks with dipping sauce. For dinner, it was lobster roll time. It had large chunks of lobster meat and was served with tasty homemade fries. Other entrees include chicken & barley stew, burgers and a seasonal spinach ravioli with artichokes and olives.

The caramel apple tart came highly recommended for dessert and it did not disappoint. This warm tart is topped off with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The pastry itself was very flavorful and the whole dish was complimented by just enough caramel.

The food at The Tap Trailhouse is very good. They also offer brunch on the weekend which I am interested in trying. The only downside is this place can get loud. Union Street is the home to loud, partying college students on weekend nights. They often pack the bars of every restaurant including The Tap. They also check ID's at the door, which is a pain. So, if you're looking for a quiet, romantic night in Boston, this ain't your place, at least on weekends.

LOBSTER TOUR 2015: CAPE COD LOBSTER CRUISES

Wednesday, May 27, 2015
Eat Up New England is sampling as many lobster rolls and lobster dishes as possible this summer as part of its Lobster Tour 2015. This weekend, I found the most delicious lobster roll yet on Cape Cod Lobster Tours in Sesuit Harbor.

This cruise is the perfect way to kick off the summer with its breath-taking views of the Cape and its beaches. There is a fully stocked bar, where I ordered the refreshing margarita you see above. Not only do you get an amazing cruise, you'll also get a full meal. Check out that lobster roll! It was so fresh with huge chunks of lobster meat. I've been craving another one ever since!

LOBSTER TOUR 2015: SOLAS IN BOSTON

Thursday, May 07, 2015
On Tuesday, it was 80 degrees out in Boston. It was the perfect time to continue Eat Up New England's Lobster Tour 2015! I stopped at Solas in the Back Bay for my next lobster roll.

This Irish pub has all of the traditional Irish dishes, along with some tasty bar food. Apps include nachos, their amazing house made potato chips with dipping sauce (TRY THESE!), potato & cheese dumplings, sliders, quesadillas and egg rolls. There's a Guinness onion soup on the menu, but I went for a pint of my favorite beer instead. The main menu includes a bunch of burgers, a homemade veggie burgers, chicken pot pie, mac-n-cheese, shepherd's pie and beef stew.

The hot summery weather was the perfect excuse to try their lobster roll. A large portion of cold lobster salad was served on top of some lettuce and a buttery roll. It's served with a huge portion of homemade fries. There were enough fries for two people. Who knew you could find such a delicious lobster roll at an Irish pub?!
