ALTA STRADA AT FOXWOODS

Tuesday, September 29, 2015
After playing the slots at Foxwoods, check out one of their fine restaurants. Eat Up New England enjoyed an Italian dinner at Alta Strada recently.

This spacious restaurant boosts a full bar, tons of seating and all of the Italian favorites. Every meal starts with a generous portion of bread. Appetizers include clams, fried calamari, veal meatballs and a giant shrimp cocktail. There are many pastas to choose from for dinner. There's spaghetti, rigatoni with sausage and peas and mushroom ravioli. If you can't choose just one pasta, they are happy to serve you two small plates. Eat Up NE enjoyed the tagliatelle bolognese. It was hearty and fresh, just like a good bolognese should be.

There's also an "old schools favorites" section on the menu. It's filled with dishes like chicken under a brick, prime boneless sirloin, zuppa di pesce and chicken milanese. In the mood for a burger? You can get Alta Strada's Killer Burger with homemade French fries.

If you can't make it to Foxwoods, Alta Strada has a second location in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

FARM FRESH ITALIAN AT TUSCAN BRICK OVEN BISTRO IN MAINE

Sunday, September 13, 2015

Tuscan Brick Oven Bistro in Freeport, Maine prides itself on using only the best fresh ingredients from local farms and businesses. The ingredients combine to make some unforgettable Italian-inspired dishes.

Tuscan Bistro has a full bar stock full with several Maine beers, ciders and wines. I was very excited see Shipyard's Pumpkinhead on tap. They served it was a tasty cinnamon rim. There's no better place than to kick of fall beer season than in Maine.

Dinner began with the burrata caprese. Served with red and green tomatoes and crisp crustini, this was one of the best caprese salads Eat Up NE has ever tried. Other apps include Maine mussels, brick oven wings, antipasto, calamari and a meatball stuffed Portobello mushroom.

The menu is made up of brick oven pizzas, including white clam, fennel sausage & burrata and funghi. The pizza looks so good! I went for one of their homemade pastas. All of my favorites are on the menu including lobster mac & cheese, chicken parm and potato gnocchi. I loved their Bolognese, which consists of trumpet pasta, beef & sausage ragu and is topped with ricotta. It was amazing. I would order this dish over and over again.

Tuscan Bistro is also open for lunch, where diners can choose from several sandwiches including twin lobster rolls, bistro burger, chicken parm sandwich and a crispy cod pocket.

Tuscan Brick Oven Bistro is a new Eat Up New England Favorite. What food! Not to mention the ambience is beautiful, from the lighting fixtures to the bar. There are even small sofas for some lucky diners to sit on. There is also some outdoor seating while it's still warm out.

ISABELLA'S STICKY BUNS IN FREEPORT, MAINE

Tuesday, September 08, 2015

One of my favorite high-calorie breakfasts is the bacon, egg and cheese biscuit at McDonald's. Isabella's Sticky Buns in Freeport, Maine also has this classic sandwich on their menu, but of course, theirs is so much better. It's made with bacon and eggs right off of the grill. I enjoyed mine with some cheddar cheese. The biscuit was warm and crumbly.

Isabella's serves breakfast and lunch all day. Their coffee is from Maine's Coffee By Design. Other breakfast options include pancakes, French toast, scrambles and omelets. Their famous sticky buns are topped with walnuts and raisins. They even have a sticky bun French toast on the menu. For lunch, there are grilled sandwiches like the turkey & granny smith apple, baked ham & Swiss cheese and the vegan burger. There are also several soups and salads on the menu.

Isabella's is open daily in the summer and fall. They are closed Mondays and Tuesdays January- May. It's just steps away from the L.L. Bean headquarters in Freeport.

CEREAL MILK ICE CREAM AT MILK BAR IN NYC

Saturday, September 05, 2015
Milk Bar in New York City is the buzz of foodies because of their clever twists on traditional dessert favorites.  Eat Up NE recently stopped by their Midtown location and tried their cereal milk soft serve. It tastes like the milk leftover in the cereal. They'll even sprinkle it with some cornflakes. It's very good. Eat UP NE was addicted from the start. Milk Bar also has a cereal milk shake on the menu.

Milk also has some very tempting looking cakes, like apple pie and chocolate chip cakes. Creative cookies include the blueberry & cream cookie and their famous compost cookie with pretzels, potato chips, butterscotch and chocolate chips. They're also known for their "crack pie," which is described as "gooey butter cake meets chess pie."

If you're mouth is watering right now, you can order many of their tasty treats online:

BREAKFAST WITH A VIEW AT ROSE'S BERRY FARM

Saturday, September 05, 2015
The best breakfast Eat Up New England enjoyed all summer was at Rose's Berry Farm in South Glastonbury, Connecticut. Every Sunday, Rose's offers their highly popular Breakfast With A View. Choose from pancakes, French toast or a Belgian waffle. They are all topped with blueberries picked right there in the farm and some delicious homemade whipped cream. Eat Up NE loved the pancakes with a side of bacon.

Not only is the food amazing but you get to enjoy it on a large open air porch overlooking Rose's Berry Farm. Breakfast With A View goes from June to October, so there's still time to have one of the best breakfasts in New England.

INSIDE THE NEW ULTRA MODERN NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE'S IN WALTHAM

Tuesday, September 01, 2015
Check out the sparkling new Not Your Average Joe's in Waltham, Massachusetts. The place is beautiful inside and out, with high ceilings, a bar with flatscreen TV's, booths and high-top seating. There is also some patio seating outside which will be a nice place to sip on some fall beer in a few weeks. The food seemed to tasted better than ever when eat Up NE stopped by. Every meal begins with their fresh focaccia bread with oil, cheese and red pepper flack dip. My favorite meal is their mustard crusted chicken.

The new NYAJ location is right across from Jake 'n Joes in the new 1265 Main Street development.

ST. ANTHONY'S FEAST 2015

Sunday, August 30, 2015

Every year, the North End in Boston ends the summer with the St. Anthony's Feast. It's three days of incredible Italian food, music and fun. Eat Up New England was there Saturday night. I enjoyed a rice ball, pepperoni pizza and a cannoli filled with cream and dipped in chocolate chips. One of my favorite vendors was Wild Bill's Olde Fashioned Soda Pop. You buy a tin cup for $12 and get unlimited refills for the rest of the day. Eat Up NE loved their root beer and vanilla soda.

INSIDE THE NEW BOSTON PUBLIC MARKET

Saturday, August 29, 2015

The brand new Boston Public Market is a fresh food lover's dream come true. It's made up of small shops, all of them selling locally sourced foods, drinks, flowers and other products.

Eat Up NE recently parked in the garage that's right next to the BPM, and what struck me was the smell of cider donuts at ground level. That unmistakable fall smell comes from Red Apple Farm. They make their own cider donuts topped with cinnamon right there. You take a bag home, which of course we did! They also sell apples, fudge, jellies and cider slushies.

Walking around BPM, Eat Up NE was quickly overwhelmed by the variety of fresh and local foods. Appleton Farms sells the cheese that they make. Red's Best offers seafood right off of the boat. Q's Nuts has a huge display of sweet and savory nuts. Taza Chocolate has a chocolate bar where you can get hot and iced chocolate drinks. Yes, there's even a beer vendor. Hopster's Alley, with shelves and shelves of local beer. Bee on the lookout for The Boston Honey Company. They have a display of live bees!

The Boston Public Market is open Wednesday thru Sunday from 8am-8pm, so don't stop by on a Monday or Tuesday.

DELICIOUS DISH: LASAGNA AT TRATTORIA IL PANINO

Monday, August 24, 2015
Lasagna is Garfield's favorite food and if you were to try this lasagna it would certainly be one of your favorites, too! Eat Up NE loves the meat lasagna at Trattoria Il Panino in Boston's North End. There's layer after layer of thin lasagna noodles stuffed with their delicious meat sauce. It's so rich that it's sure to fill you up no matter how hungry you are.

VENEZUELAN & SPANISH FOOD COLLIDE AT LA CASA DE PEDRO

Sunday, August 23, 2015
Strawberry daquiri
Tequenos
Quesadillas con chorizo
Check out their salt water fish tank near the bar.
Eat Up NE has been wanting to try La Casa de Pedro in Watertown, Massachusetts for some time, and finally got there last week. This large restaurant offers a menu of traditional Venezuelan food, along with some Mexican favorites.

The outside patio is a popular place to dine at La casa de Pedro, but when Eat Up NE visited, it was 90 degrees out. We kept it cool inside. Pedro has a full bar with tons of wine, draft beer, craft beer, martini, sangria and cocktail options. Eat Up NE kept it tropical with a refreshing strawberry daiquiri. We started off with their house favorite "tequenos" for an appetizer. Tequenos are a popular app in Venezuela. It's cheese breaded with puff pastry that's fried. they were very good. Other apps include ceviche, chicken & chorizo, nachos and tortillas.

There are endless lunch and dinner options. There are several salads, quesadillas, meat and fish dinners, along with a few vegetarian options. I really liked the "Quesadilla con Chorizo." This huge platter of quesadillas came with yucca, plantains and black bean rice.

LOBSTER TOUR: ROBERT'S MAINE GRILL

Sunday, August 23, 2015
Lobster is one of the many things Maine is known for. Yesterday, I enjoyed a lobster roll at Eat Up New England favorite Robert's Maine Grille in Kittery, Maine. They'll prepare your roll warm with butter or cold with mayo. I went for warm. There really is such a difference in taste when you have lobster right by the ocean. Robert's lobster rolls come in regular and jumbo sizes. The one above is regular and was plenty, especially since a paired it up with some clam chowder. Their regular lobster and chowder special is $25. The jumbo special is $30.

Robert's really is the place to go for lobster. There's a tank full of live lobsters on the left when you walk in. They'll steam one up or top off a cobb salad with lobster meat. Customers can even order a clambake for two which comes with a lobster.

Robert's is open year round, so you can enjoy a lobster even in the middle of the winter!

LOBSTER BURGER NOW AT SHAKE SHACK!

Tuesday, August 18, 2015
Eat Up New England's lobster tour continues at an unlikely place: Shake Shack. The burger joint is now serving this Surf N' Shack burger at all of its New England locations. It's topped with lobster. I ordered one at their Dedham, Massachusetts location today. It's delicious. Of course, Shake Shack could top their burgers with just about anything and it would still be good. These special burgers are $8.99 and will be available through September 20.

(Closed) DINE OUT BOSTON: BLUE GINGER IN WELLESLEY

Monday, August 17, 2015
Spicy Paella with House Chorizo
Beef Tataki & Shiitakes
Eat Up New England has always wanted to check out celebrity chef Ming Tsai's Blue Ginger in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Dine Out Boston was the perfect excuse to stop by for lunch today.

For an app, I enjoyed their beef tataki and shiitakes. It's served with just enough wasabi. It's complementary, not over-powering. I LOVED the spicy paella with house chorizo entree. It's served with several mussels and their wicked good chorizo. What an amazing dish!

For lunch, Blue Ginger is serving a 2-course menu for $20. Add dessert for $25. Three course dinners are $38. The chef will also make up a vegetarian option.
